Can you fly over my house? Google Earth pic is about 16 months old.

Great quality on those pictures. Can you please provide the specs of the drone/camera?

Did you buy a kit or buy individual parts?
Link Posted: 9/12/2013 8:41:50 AM EST
built the DJI F550 kit with their supplied motors and esc.

Radio is a Futaba 8J

Camera is a GoPro 3 black on a Beholder gimbal

Controller is a Naza M Lite w/ gps

Next is to get the FPV thing going on it so I can better compose my shots.

Here is a video of my third flight test. Working out some bugs with the gimbal (shakes a little)

Please someone embed.

What is the battery life / run time?

Cool, is this your first one?

I think I might get one to take pictures of people's acreages/farms and to check crops with.

First one. And the thing is a blast. They will be harvesting corn here in the next couple weeks so I am going to go film some of that action.

Move your battery to the back of the gear instead of on top then you can move the gimbal in front so you don't see the blades.

Good save by the way.

the bare kit with motors, esc and blades runs around 300. It goes up from there.

You need a radio which can run from 69 to 600
Flight controller which is around 200
Don't forget batteries mid 30's to 70 bucks a pop
Battery charger 25 to 200
Then you have to decide if you want to shoot video/stills
If you do then do you want a gimbal?

Oh. Then there is the FPV (first person video) thing which can be another couple hundred.

It can add up fast. So be careful and don't crash.
Link Posted: 9/13/2013 5:13:02 AM EST
Very cool. I would love to try that but I'm afraid I would crash it or it would drop in one of the many ponds or lakes around here. Then I would be out all the money.

Not to mention the area around here is a little densely populated and the liability scares me and anyone who sees it might call the Police and that would lead to a whole other issue. I know there was a story recently where a local guy flew one over one of the busiest freeways in the area and lost control. It was found and turned into the Police who had a nice talk with him about the liability of flying it over a very busy freeway.
Link Posted: 9/13/2013 8:59:20 AM EST
Took it out this morning away from trees. Much less stress flying it.

Once I get more comfortable with the controls I will try some more low level stuff. Right now my comfort level is about 20 feet off the ground. That gives me some time for corrections if I fuck up.

Y'know what's fucked up?

That robot you built takes better pictures than you do.

Seriously, though, that is super cool.
Link Posted: 9/13/2013 11:21:38 PM EST
Nice copter. I got one of the Parrot AR drones... and frankly it sucks.

I want to build something similar to OP, but use the Arduino based system, so I can program flight paths with GPS and do things like 'return home'. FPV would be pretty damn cool, too.

And speed?

I have roughly the same build as the op, I get about 8 minutes loaded down with a 3 cell 50000mah battery and can do 40mph ground speed. ive had it up to 1000 feet (desolate desert). Still testing but summer here makes for little time for flying.

There are some smaller quads that are more nimble and if I had to do it again I'd get one of those (google tbs discovery pro). The hobby has exploded in innovation within just the last year or so and gear is getting better.

I'm currently having a plane built so I can go out to 10 miles or so.
Link Posted: 9/14/2013 3:47:46 PM EST
I get about 10 minutes on a single 5000mAh 3s battery.

Top speed I don't know as I dont have a way to check... yet

Any thoughts about moving the battery underneath to lower you center of gravity. I think maybe that is why you went inverted.

Also why did you choose your flight controller over the Naza M with gps/ compass? I did not notice a gps antenna on yours and if it is on your controller how good a signal are you getting with it being under the top plate?

Will have to read up on. I want a chassis that can be 3D printed, since I have a printer coming in November. That way if I break a strut, or spar or whatever, I can just print another.

You try out ProTune on the GoPro? I'm just getting into messing with it, but the footage seems to look quite a bit better after you run it through the GoPro Studio preset.

I was at an outdoor club at Mandalay Bay a while ago, and they were filming the festivities with a drone flying around that appeared to be sporting a Canon 5D. Thing was so big it damn near needed FAA clearance.
Tried hunting google but can't figure out what they were using.
Link Posted: 9/15/2013 10:33:33 AM EST
I've been trying to convince them to buy one at work for inspections. Yeah inspections, not just because they're totally awesome.

I asked a question in the other thread.

Any sub $200 with longer than 5-6 minute fly times on one battery charge?

Almost, but you'd need a battery and radio controller/receiver.

Got the FPV working.

I will be heading back to this spot now that I will be able to see where I am going.
Link Posted: 9/19/2013 1:40:48 PM EST
With the FPV I am more confident on letting it get farther from me. This last flight I relied completely on FPV till it came time to land.

New Chick-Fil-A they are building down the street

Getting braver now that the FPV is working well

How much money is in your set up?

Does anyone make a camera with good resolution with wireless feed?

I always wanted to build a drone and set up a "cockpit" on the ground via video feed, and some antenna set up to extend range.

I would have to check the but I would guess I am in around 1500 or so.

I am using a 5.8gHz video downlink @ 500mW so I can see real time what the camera is recording. I have not tested the full range of my radios but from what others have discovered I should be able to get several kilometers in a line of site situation.

That is a pretty awesome setup. It looks like a pretty stable platform in flight. How hard was it to learn how to fly it?

Not hard at all. GPS helps a bunch.
