Would love to have it, but I could not own a car I could not drive and enjoy.

Saw one with 300 original miles go at auction for $115k.

I imagine that will go for more.

One with 151 or so miles sold for $169k last year or so. I bet this goes higher than $250k

Probably one of the few cars worth buying at the auction.

Cool story to go with it.

  • Since a total of 547 were eventually produced, Buick contacted the Pittsburgh dealership and offered to give the original owner GNX No. 500 and a new Buick Reatta to acquire the last GNX built
  • The original owner turned down the offer and kept the car in a climate controlled facility for years

Rumer has it there may be a couple more "GNXs" than the documented 547 due to ASC and Buick employees running their privately owned Grand Nationals down the GNX conversion line before closing up shop.

They offered to trade him a Reatta for that?

He chose wisely.

I'd drive the shit out of that car.

And that's why I can't have nice things. Well, that, and the money.

If only they had put that engine in a decent looking car.  I want to love the GN/GNX, I really do.

My mistake, I misread. Still not seeing much motivation there though. Now #500 plus a regular GN to drive and have fun with...

I honestly don't know the difference, i'll leave that to the Turbo Buick aficionados. I just remember them as being the most ridiculous sleepers back in the 80's. It's this: Attachment Attached File

I'm not saying it was a good deal.

I would've done it for #500 and another GNX.

I mean, they weren't hideous.... but I get what your saying. It was the eighties, though. Most cars looked like they were designed by the same guy.

Ceramic turbo, larger IC (IIRC), pan-hard bar rear, different rims, etc

They put it in a Trans Am in 1989. Fastest production vehicle that year, I believe.

IIRC the suspension automatically lifts up the rear of the car during launches.
It also had fender vents, flared fenders, different instrument cluster, and more shit i cant remember at the moment

The GN was factory built. The GNX was a GN modified by Mclaren/ASC under factory authorization.

I'd get an old Regal, paint it black and put a nice LSX under the hood and walk off on that thing. And still have a hundred large left.

They did...

But GM was retarded, and could not put out anything better than the Corvette, because the Vette was/is the halo car, but the TPI was a turd in pretty much all forms. Was the fastest production F-body until the Formula T/A's with the LS1 came out almost a decade later. I think GM only built 1000 of them. A running example in good shape runs about as much as a clean GN.

I worked with a guy in CO that owned one and drove that fucker to work every day.   Oddly  he even still wore bell bottom jeans that he possibly bought in the 70's.  One of the girl apprentices asked him where he got them because she wanted a pair.  Very cool cars and I would love to have one.

Drove one back in the late eighties/early nineties. Beat the living shit out of that car. Lot of fun to drive.

Car & driver/ motor trend or somebody did a "Trans Am" comparison that took a lot of them to the strip. Only one faster was the LS. The slowest was the 82 or some turd like that.

IIRC the TTA ran low 13's &106-7 on flat-spotted tires (had sit in a museum for over a decade) & was running like crap. Should have ran 12's running right.
