I'm in the market for a short upper for a pistol build, 10.5" minimum to say 12" at the most. Until I can sell or trade my AAC .300blk upper, I'm on a fairly tight budget for this, say $350 or less. I've considered trying to build my own, but as important as the upper construction is to reliability and accuracy I'm a bit hesitant. The only other uppers I've been able to find in the same price range as PSA tend to be 1/9 not 1/7, non-chromed bore etc.

So, are there any alternatives I should look at for a budget shorty upper, or is PSA the best there is at the price point?

Pre order from DSG. It's complete including a Seekins handguard and BCG/CH. Also has an adjustable gas block. Not a chrome lined bore, but melonite barrel so it should be just about as durable

Back during the height of the salad days, PSA would put their 10.5" upper, with FN made CHF barrel and double-heat shield M4 handguards on sale for $319.  It's a 1x7 twist with double chrome lined M249 barrel.  That's a hot little number.

It's $299 right now - but I think the DSG upper is a better value. Especially since they don't charge your card right away and they're back ordered for a little. Gives OP some time to free up the extra $50

I hope not.  I haven't been shopping for salad in the past six months, but it seems like you don't see people talking about salad days here as much as they were in the spring and summer.

If I was going to do a build I'd just get a new stripped upper to do it on, they're cheap enough.

Haven't shot my short uppers for groups really, but the 10.5'' was hitting a 10'' circle at 250 yards consistently with M193.

My 16'' CHF barrels were in the area of 3 MOA with Tula/M193/M855 and 1-1.5 with quality ammo.

I second this. I was shooting 2" groups @ 100yds after about a 50 shot break in. Shipping was fast and they support the site. I will use them when I build my 7" pistol.

Email them letting them know your a member here and they should give you a discount.

Right now I'm going back and forth between the DSG which has a nicer rail and the Androcorp which has a front sight tower which I like.

Anyone know what the deal is with the adjustable gas block on the DSG? I don't want to get it then discover the gas block is a gimmicky piece of crap that's causing me problems.

I love it.

So far I've tested it with several different mags, brass cased, steel cased and reloads not a single failure and it's accurate too.

Bravo Company has had 11.5 in 5.56 uppers (bring your own hand guard) for around $439, and they are including the bolt carrier group for FREE, so it was not much more than the PSA upper. However, Bravo is currently out of stock of most of their lower cost pistol uppers at the moment.

Honestly, the nonly reason I haven't ordered yet is this line.

"The initial run of DSG Complete Uppers are sold out. Orders placed on/after 11/25 are expected to ship within 30 business days. ALL BACKORDERS WILL BE FILLED. Special introductory price ends 12/1 at midnight."

So, I have a few days to see if some amazing deal pops up or get a trade offer for my AAC upper etc before I need to make a decision one way or the other.
