BBC elites confounded by their listeners

The BBC recently gave its radio listeners a chance to express their will, but did not want to hear the result. The great unwashed mass, who cough-up the license fees which pay the Beeb’s freight, were asked to suggest a piece of legislation to improve life in Britain, with the promise that an MP would then attempt to get it onto the statute books.

Listeners to BBC 4’s Today program (the very same show which claimed that intelligence on Iraqi WMDs had been “sexed up”), reposnded with a suggestion that would allow homeowners to defend themselves against intruders, without facing legal liabilities. The winning proposal was denounced as a "ludicrous, brutal, unworkable blood-stained piece of legislation" - by Stephen Pound, the very MP whose job it is to try to push it through Parliament.

The Independent   reports that Mr Pound's reaction was provoked by the news that the winner of Today's "Listeners' Law" poll was a plan to allow homeowners "to use any means to defend their home from intruders" - a prospect that could see householders free to kill burglars, without question.

"The people have spoken," the Labour MP replied to the programme, "... the bastards."

Having recovered his composure, Mr Pound told The Independent: "We are going to have to re-evaluate the listenership of Radio 4. I would have expected this result if there had been a poll in The Sun. Do we really want a law that says you can slaughter anyone who climbs in your window?"

The Sun is a Murdoch-owned tabloid noted for photos of bare-breasted women and nationalistic support of Britain’s participation in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

MP Pound’s disdain for popular opinion is typical of not only British, but Western European elites, who consider themselves, and the nations whose public policies they control, to be vastly superior to the uncivilized Yanks, who carry guns and execute vicious criminals. Public opinion polls show that a majority of Britons favor capital punishment, but there is virtually no chance it will be re-introduced to Britain anytime soon.

Segments of the British public have been outraged over the jailing of Norfolk farmer Tony Martin, who shot a burglar who had broken into his house. In all probability, this outraged fuelled the votes which selected resulted in victory for the self-defense (or ‘vigilante’) law which won the BBC poll.

MP Pound plans cursory introduction of the bill which he promised, but will only go through the motions. He called it  "the sort of idea somebody comes up with in a bar on a Saturday night between 'string 'em all up' and 'send 'em all all home'".

You know the Europeans are absolutely brilliant people.

Brilliant in art, culture, science, math, literature, technical and engineering stuff.

But politics?

Oh god how they're such miserable failures.  And you just want to cry at their failures.

Yeah, I agree, the British people shouldn't be allowed to defend their own homes. Especially MPs.

There's a simple solution for those who wish to defend their home without getting arrested:  don't call the police.

They still wear those wigs don't they?  Freaks.

I think it's a great law.  I'd love to have the right to blow away anything that comes into my home uninvited.

I think it's a great law.

My Friends,

That MP's attitude and his reaction to the will of his consituents is EXACTLY what we can expect IF we vote our own, homegrown American liberals into office.

Want to maintain what RKBA rights we have (Or ANY other rights for that matter!)?  DON'T vote for the [liberal] Democrat the next time you cruise on into the voting booth and pull the lever.

Many Dems say they are "pro-gun".  Fine...some actually are.  The problem arises when, as a PARTY the Democrats achieve critical mass...that golden fleece...THE MAJORITY.  As soon as they do...you can count on them to begin serious social engineering...and in their party, by and large, they loath guns.  Furthermore, they pretty much loath most of us too...like that socialist Brit prick.  So typical of an arrogant liberal to say what he said about his own people.  Any of you don't think that is what lots of our elites sitting on their fat asses in DC think about us...those dangerous, unwashed masses?

Damn...I hate liberal socialists...on either side of the pond!  [pissed]

Why would anyone want the right to defend their homes and families from criminals?

Please call them leftists, to distinguish them from actual liberals.
Liberals are good.  Most of the people who call themselves liberals, aren't.

That is a VERY good point, Doublefeed.  The "liberal" label has been co-opted by leftists who want to cloak themselves in a "liberty" counding label.  In truth, this country was founded on true "Liberal" principles.  The "liberals" of today want to take away that liberty, and we should no be fooled by the label.

Interestingly enough, those are the three options that get votes.  Take a look at Ron Paul.  He gets no attention because he doesn't care about trying to buy people's votes with the currency of government entitlement programs.
Invariably, if I talk to a nongun person about freedom and social programs, they will consistently come back at me about 'sense of community' and 'what is good for society'.  Then they deny that the individual has much, if any, power at all to control his life/environment/safety by himself.
Do you think if the people heard the profreedom message and supporting information, they would like it, or keep refuting it?

Not only that, but the leftist approach to the words they use invites me to make an everyday effort to be as precise as possible with language.
Banter about 'living language' and 'the meaning of words change with time' virtually define the leftist and his approach to life.  Instead of choosing the word which is most suited to what he really means, he grabs any ole word and then claims the meaning has changed over time.  This, coupled with the lack of knowledge, makes for combination you can't pin down in a debate unless you can figure out what that the leftist has something in mind but is using the wrong words.
Last night, reading DU, I found a thread in which some idiot was claiming that Paul Wellstone's aircraft was disabled by an electromagnetic pulse weapon.  Somebody came on later in the thread and explained the variety of directed energy weapons, like microwave weapons.  The original tinfoil hat poster then came back and said he was using the term 'EMP' as a blanket term for all varieties of directed energy weapons.

Well, old chap, we can't have the sheep getting uppity now, can we?  After all, next thing they'll be wanting more control over their petty little lives & wot.  No, the government exists to tell people what's good for them and to protect them from themselves.  Defending one's home?  Rubbish!  That's what we have the police for!
