Britney Spears has shelled-out $25,000 after wrecking a Ferrari and almost killing herself in the process. Spears is reported to have hired the £200,000 Ferrari 360 Modena in Beverley Hills earlier this week, but blew up the gear box within two hours. The Princess of Pop apparently attempted to put the car into second gear whilst travelling at 85mph, causing the car to blow-out, swerve across two lanes before crashing to a stop. Spears, who is not used to driving with a manual gearbox, was unhurt, but agreed to pay for the damage to the motor. A spokesman for the hire firm commented: "She'd not been gone very long when we got a phone call saying the vehicle had broken down on a freeway. She has agreed to pay the $25,000 repair bill."

Maybe we could hire her to drive Ted Kennedy to the airport. Well maybe not, I don't think you could get his fat ass into a Ferrari.

Every now and then you hear about some stupid kid who crashed a Ferrari because they didn't know what they were doing. Like that hotel valet a few months ago who thought he'd take a quick joy ride and crashed in to a tree before he even made it out of the parking lot. Driving a Ferarri is not like what you see in the movies. The shifter is very stiff and unless you know what you are doing, you can easily put it in the wrong gear. There's so much torque in the V-12 engine that if you get the revs up the thing will kareen out of control. Ever see the movie "The Rock"? Nick Cage jumps in a yellow Ferrari "I've always wanted to do this" he says to himself and takes off. I wonder how many stupids kids saw that and thought "Cool...I could do that".

I have had the good fortune to drive a few older Ferraris;mostly 308's, a few older Dinos and several Testarossas. They are fairly easy to drive but one must certainly know what one is doing when the rev's go up. The shifters are what they call I believe "gated", and can be tough to shift, especially at lower speeds. If I ever win the LOTTO I would surely buy one or two........FN

If she crashed my Ferrari she would be dead, I'd kill the bitch myself!

In Terminator they made the car stop really fast by putting it into park.

lucky for brittany that she had her own, built-in airbags. Betcha a dollar she didn't feel a thing.
Link Posted: 8/21/2001 4:31:36 AM EDT
Ummm.....I highly doubt this story. Reason: Ferrari's can do up to 60MPH on 1st before it red-lines 90MPH on 2nd before it red-lines. Unless she dropped it in 2nd doing 100+ this should not be a problem. The Modena also comes stock in US with the new tiptronic and the manual is an option. So if this is the tip-tronic version, it would be highly unlikely for this to happen. basing my info on an article from Road and Track. I wish I could base it on a personally owned Modena

She should only be allowed to drive Cameros or Mustangs. Many years ago, I almost bought a used 1977 308GT. I could afford the car and the insurance, and was ready to buy. Until I found out how much the maintenance schedule was, and if it really broke, there was no way I could afford to fix it.

The 360 Modena can indeed take 85mph in 2nd gear without too much problem. However, it is available with a stick shift. The tiptronic you're referring to is called the "F1" shifting system that Ferrari uses on their Formula 1 race cars. It uses paddles for shifting and does have a mode for automatic gear shifting as well as manual. Still, I'd be piss if someone blew up my Ferrari 360.

The Boss Hoss' don't have gears. It just has a torque converter. When you're ready to go you just flick the switch on the bars and twist the throttle. If you got too enthusiastic you could just about lay yourself on your side with the torque of that big V8.

I"m getting tired of looking at her cardboard cutout at the local 7-Eleven
Link Posted: 8/21/2001 10:37:03 AM EDT
while the engine might be able to do 90 mph in 2nd, keep in mind that you would need to match the revs to keep from locking up the rear end. Drop it into 2nd at 90 mph while at 800 rpm, and that's a great way to lose control I did have a friend stick a Caddy automatic in park at 45mph, that was fun. ANother idiot friend liked sticking his landboat into reverse at 65. Eventually stuck a piston through the hood.

Did she get a ticket? Isn't 90mph speeding in all 50 states? [rolleyes]
Link Posted: 8/21/2001 10:50:44 AM EDT
It's not a tiptronic transmission. It's a true manual transmission with a computer controlled servo actuated clutch. It is not an automatic transmission with a planetary gear set. Most 360's in the U.S. are equipped this way. Who knows what the stupid bitch did. She probably doesn't know herself.

Generally speaking yes. Above 10-15 MPH the auto transmission shouldn't engage reverse and self-destruct. Some manual shifting cars have rev limiters, which prevent up shift over revs. You can still blow the engine on a downshift if you over spin the engine with the gearbox by hitting the wrong gear.

Hey Frankthespank, you make it sound like Rosie crashed the car. Lighten up man. There ain't anything wrong with Britinay (sp). You sound like you have a few things in common with Ted Bundy.

Anyone familiar with a 3-on-the-tree or 3-speed floor shift manual is VERY familiar with this shift pattern (except for the 4 and 5, of course!) Then of course there's the "deuce-and-a-half" shift pattern that messes quite a few young sodliers up! No wonder the FMTV (and about every other recent military vehicle) use an automatic.[:D]

PS: What are the torque/HP specs for this engine? From everything I've heard, they make a relatively small amount of torque and depend more on RPM and HP for their quickness.
