Plane Down Near Downtown Atlanta

A twin-engine plane spiraled out of control, witnesses say, before striking a building and crashing in downtown Atlanta.

At least one victim is believed to inside of the twin-engine Beech Baron 55, according to Atlanta fire spokeswoman Jolene Butts-Freeman. It went down near Edgewood and Boulevard. The building the plane struck is believed to be vacant or abandoned.

City of Atlanta rescue workers, including police and firefighters, are working to extricate the victim. There’s no confirmation on exactly how many people were on board.

A temporary fire in the plane has been extinguished, authorities said. Although Butts-Freeman says there is still some smoldering debris at the site. She says she unsure if it’s coming from the plane or a damaged structure.

Atlanta fire units 6, 10 and 12 are at the crash site. Officials from the Atlanta Mayor's Office of Communications were making their way to the scene, as well.

The plane departed Peachtree DeKalb Airport shortly before 10 a.m., according to a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration, and was destined for Venice, Fla. There was no further information about those onboard the plane.

A spokesperson at Atlanta Medical Center says the emergency department, which includes a trauma team, is on alert to receive anyone injured at the scene. The center is located about four blocks from the crash site along Edgewood.

There's been no confirmation if inclement weather played a role in the incident. Authorities are advising all traffic to use alternate routes to avoid delays in the area.

More details as they become available.

Yeah, two blocks from my house. BIG NOISE.

Yes, it was weather. It was pouring rain and serious wind shear, near zero visability. Whoever it was at the stick was a moron to take off in that.

crashing in downtown Atlanta

The NTSB had better get there quick before it gets stripped.

I wonder if the fuselage will fit in a MARTA car?

After the fire there isn't much left to take. Looks like it burned pretty good.

I was about a mile away and didn't hear anything. I assume the buildings blocked the sound.
