Breaking news on the CNN Page:

"President Bush defends deal to let a Dubai-based company run 6 major U.S. ports, saying he would veto any bill to hold up the deal."

From Reuters:

ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE (Reuters) - President George W. Bush said on Tuesday that a deal for a state-owned Dubai company to manage major U.S. ports should go forward and will not jeopardize U.S. security.

Bush told reporters traveling back to Washington with him from Colorado that he would veto legislation to stop the deal from going through.

"After careful review by our government, I believe the transaction ought to go forward," Bush said. He added that if the U.S. Congress passed a law to stop the deal, "I'll deal with it with a veto."

From BREITBART:

President Bush said Tuesday that the deal allowing an Arab company to take over six major U.S. seaports should go forward and that he would veto any congressional effort to stop it.

"After careful review by our government, I believe the transaction ought to go forward," Bush told reporters who had traveled with him on Air Force One to Washington. "I want those who are questioning it to step up and explain why all of a sudden a Middle Eastern company is held to a different standard than a Great British company. I am trying to conduct foreign policy now by saying to the people of the world, `We'll treat you fairly.'"

Bush called reporters to his conference room on the plane after returning from a speech in Colorado, addressing a controversy that is becoming a major headache for the White House. He said the seaports arrangement was "a legitimate deal that will not jeopardize the security of the country."

The president spoke only hours after Senate Republican Leader Bill Frist urged the administration to reverse its decision to allow the transaction, under which a British company that has been running six U.S. ports would be acquired by Dubai Ports World, a state-owned business in the United Arab Emirates.

The British company, Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co., runs major commercial operations at ports in Baltimore, Miami, New Jersey, New Orleans, New York and Philadelphia.

"The decision to finalize this deal should be put on hold until the administration conducts a more extensive review of this matter," said Frist. "If the administration cannot delay this process, I plan on introducing legislation to ensure that the deal is placed on hold until this decision gets a more thorough review."

Frist, who spoke to reporters in Long Beach, Calif., where he was on a fact-finding tour on port security and immigration issues, said he doesn't oppose foreign ownership, "but my main concern is national security."

Two Republican governors, New York's George Pataki and Maryland's Robert Ehrlich, voiced their own doubts a day earlier.

But Bush said sternly he would not back down.

"They ought to listen to what I have to say about this. They'll look at the facts and understand the consequences of what they're going to do," he said. "But if they pass a law, I'll deal with it with a veto."

So there is NO American company willing to take this contract over?

I believe in the free market, but I also believe in the concept of strategic assets. I wouldn't sell the management rights to a USAF base to a Chinese company.

What worries me is no one is giving any kind of good explanation... I'm very discouraged and pissed right now, and I've been a Bush backer on nearly everything.
Link Posted: 2/21/2006 12:06:40 PM EDT
Well, maybe this is an issue that Congress can get behind with a bipartisan vote to override any veto Bush is going to try.

Absolutely unbelieveable that he's continuing with this.

Well hell....if "The Government" approves, it must be OK!

Right?

I've been a supporter of this administration right along despite their many many foibles. This BS takes the cake though. I frankly don't give a damn if it really changes nothing. The notion of selling port management to avowed enemies is mind boggling-ly STUPID!

Might as well throw out the fact that the same UAE Corp. owns MOST the ports where all the containers are being loaded too. Facts really don't matter here, just wild emotion.

Bush has lost it. I don't think the deal is as horrible as it seems but when both Democrats and Republicans are against it you should at least give it more thought. I think the majority of Americans are against it, too, but could be persuaded if Bush's people had any communication skills.

We don't have a two party system. Boy do they have all of you brainwashed.

And yeah, I know, if you vote for a third party, you are likely, "supposedly" throwing away your vote. The Republicans and Democrats sure have done a good job keeping power between themselves haven't they!

America is one screwed up political system. Seems like no one goes by the Constitution anymore, just political pressure.

While technically we don't have a two-party system, it's obviously one choice or the other, or throw your vote away. Look what happened with Perot in the 1992 election.

I think Bush is a political idiot. However, I guess I'd rather have a fucktard like him in office instead of a Democrat.

This is a giant looser. There is no way you are going to explain this one to folks in the 30 second sound bite world in a way that makes sense. I'm not expecting a nuke to be shipped simply because they own it, but was not the UAE involved at a governement level in money laundering for terrorist groups? Is there any way to make this a positive for Senators and Congressmen about to start a campaign? Unless the President plans to start communicating and doing so well, this is a disaster of sword to fall on.

This has nothing to do with security. A British company owns it now and nothing will change if the UAE company gets it. The dock workers stay, the security stays, US Customs stays, nothing changes except the ownership. It is not like all the workers are being replaced with UAE nationals. Before complaining, learn about what you are complaining about.

It's all part of the plan.

He is showing the terrorists that we as a country trust an Islamic country to be a part of, and manage, an area of our country that is important in national security. This will in turn lead them to believe we are not "the great satan" or "evil", so they won't attack us and will in fact work with us to make the world a better place.

Yes im fully aware of this. But the fact is only 4-6% of cargo is inspected. I know it was a shitty comparison but living 15miles from one of these ports has me all concerned with this bright idea.

I think Network said it best;

JENSEN

You have meddled with the primal

forces of nature, Mr. Beale, and I

won't have it, is that clear?! You

think you have merely stopped a

business deal -- that is not the

case! The Arabs have taken billions

of dollars out of this country, and

now they must put it back. It is

ebb and flow, tidal gravity, it is

ecological balance! You are an old

man who thinks in terms of nations

and peoples. There are no nations!

There are no peoples! There are no

Russians. There are no Arabs!

There are no third worlds! There is

no West! There is only one holistic

system of systems, one vast and

immane, interwoven, interacting,

multi-variate, multi-national

dominion of dollars! petro-dollars,

electro-dollars, multi-dollars!,

Reichmarks, rubles, rin, pounds and

shekels! It is the international

system of currency that determines

the totality of life on this planet!

That is the natural order of things

today! That is the atomic,

subatomic and galactic structure of

things today! And you have meddled

with the primal forces of nature,

and you will atone! Am I getting

through to you, Mr. Beale?

(pause)

You get up on your little twenty-

one inch screen, and howl about

America and democracy. There is no

America. There is no democracy.

There is only IBM and ITT and A T

and T and Dupont, Dow, Union Carbide

and Exxon. Those are the nations of

the world today. What do you think

the Russians talk about in their

councils of state -- Karl Marx?

They pull out their linear

programming charts, statistical

decision theories and minimax

solutions and compute the price-cost

probabilities of their transactions

and investments just like we do. We

no longer live in a world of nations

and ideologies, Mr. Beale. The

world is a college of corporations,

inexorably deter- mined by the

immutable by-laws of business.

Gee let’s see George…

Dubai is a fundamentalist Muslim shithole with a hereditary monarchy distributing oil revenue to family and cronies based on being a citizen. To become a citizen you must be a member of the royal family. I.E. A fundamentalist Muslim shitbag.

The place has indentured servants from all over Asia and South America (Yes indentured servants… like slaves) Members of the Royal Family are known to fund Muslim Imams that are openly hostile to U.S. interests. On top of that, their economic system is best described as hereditary socialism.

I very much doubt that the same can be said about the British company.

You wanna call that Racism? We need a new executive if that is the case.

Possibilities

1. He needed a bookend decision to match the Myers nomination.

2. Cheney screwed up and shot Whittington a week too early, thus blowing the cover for this move.

3. Rove is awol.

4. We have a Manchurian Candidate President.

5. Bush needs a new prescription. He looked at his calendar and thought it was April 1st.

6. He has intelligence that Iran is going to announce a blockade of all US ports, so it doesn't matter who runs the ports since there won't be any ship traffic.

7. He screwed up. Instead of UAE he meant to say UAW. Since Ford and GM may go belly up he thought they could use an employment opportunity.

8. I've run out of ideas. Your turn.
