I'm sure just a normal crash due to mechanical failure.

I just heard MSNBC referencing helicopter shot down.  They have guns, not stinger missiles and RPGs in NOLA.

These choppers are running continuously, only stopping for maintenance due to failures.  Refueling mid-air repeatedly.  More failures are going to occur with more time.  But I seriously down a  helicopter was SHOT down.

Two crew are safe according to MSNBC's ticker.
Video showed pilot's seat empty, nobody strapped in in the cargo compartment, I saw a small fire in the engine exhaust port.

ETA: CNN now reporting pilot and crew have been rescued.

From the underside that looks like an S76.  If it is, that's a very reliable chopper.  It could still be brought down with a lucky hit.  Looks like a controlled ditch or it'd be all over the place.  Most likely rolled after it hit the ground.

Edit:  Never mind, saw it from a different view, ain't a 76.  Still looks like a CG chopper.

Stupid question:  Why don't they get some of the oilfield choppers there too?

I figured he was getting them out of the way for more assistance to come in without causing more damage.

yall should listen to the local TV-news chopper feeds (Google your local news station ID's + frequencies and a site or three will usually pop up)

they send em around like billiard balls from accident to accident... "go here, this one sounds like it's a bad one!" and the like...

"Dirty Laundry" (Don Henley) nailed it.

Let the people doing work get their jobs done, plenty of drama for the news vultures without clogging the skies. (If I were prez I would have declared a no-fly zone for news aircraft unless specifically requested by ATC)

Heard Master P hired a helo or so and was trying to locate all of his family down there the other day. ?
Maybe we could get lucky and Jesse Jackson with his crew could take a header (providing the crew survives unscathed).

It's not a USCG helo. The model and markings are wrong. It's a private helo and a USCG helo was sent to get the two crewmen out. The crewmen, btw, were unhurt, thankfully.

AFAIK, Uncle sugar's helos will always have at least 3 crewmen aboard, with the exception of 2-seaters. That's one reason I was never afraid of riding in a miltary aircraft; the crewchief rides too, and he has a personal stake in how well maintained it is.

Still, I don't know of anyone else around there that has choppers that color other than CG.

I'm still wondering why they don't get some of the chopper companies down there involved.  I'm sure they moved their choppers out of the area and could bring them back in.
