Passenger jet on fire at Toronto airport
Last Updated Tue, 02 Aug 2005 16:52:51 EDT CBC News An Air France jet with as many as 200 people aboard has skidded off a runway at Toronto's Pearson International Airport, bursting into flames and sending thick black smoke pouring into the air. There is no word on the condition of the passengers and crew members on board the A340, with the plane still burning an hour after the 3:50 p.m. crash. The Air France jet burst into flames after skidding off a runway at Toronto's Pearson Airport Tuesday. The jet has a capacity of about 200 people. The airplane was trying to land in bad weather when it skidded off the runway just metres from one of Toronto's busiest roads, Highway 401. "There was quite a downpour. The visibility was really bad, with lots of lightning," said John Finday, a CBC News journalist who was at the airport at the time of the accident. The jet crashed through barriers and ended up in a small ravine at the far west end of the airport, the fuselage tipped down and the aircraft's tail in the air. "An Air France plane landing on runway 2-4 left went off the end of the runway in the area of Convert Drive and the 401 area in Mississauga," Peel police Sgt. Glyn Griffiths said at about 4:30 p.m. "Unknown at the time of any injuries. Flame was seen from the plane. And full response by all emergency vehicles." The incident happened as most operations at the airport were grounded because of the severe thunderstorms that had been reported in the area. Rescue crews are on the scene. Link |

I thought you couldn't do that. |
It looks like the fuselage is in decent shape. I hope people were able to get out.
The flight crew immediately surrendered to airport fire fighters.
I really hope they all got out safely...
unless ofcourse, they were all french government officials. |
Good fucking night, people. 200 people on a fucking plane that's on FIRE. NO reports of anyone getting out as of yet. Grow the fuck up. |
Scarebus
I'm sure it'll end up being blamed on "Pilot Error" though |
tons of reports of people getting out. I'm listening to a toronto news station being rebroadcast on local news station
people were reported to be getting out before emergency vehicles made it to the scene now they're saying there are some minor injuries |
Good to hear. All I have is FoxNews, and they didn't have any people coming out. Edit: Now they said that there have been people taken to local hospitals. No numbers though. Edit also, there were 291 people aboard. |
Maybe we could find out if there are any dead (especially kids) before we start making stupid fucking jokes
Amen man. That's my point exactly. They're saying the pilot and co-pilot are being interviewed, and are safe. Maybe some more people got out. |
didn't france just kick some members of a particular religion out of their country???
big +1. death of innocents isn't funny. |
we got part of that storm here in buffalo. it was pretty heavy lightning
I managed to get CFRB 1010AM from Toronto on my Grundig crank power radio. Just said large numbers of survivors. Hard to get a number they said as people are walking into the triage area on their own "Please people, if you're driving by on the highway don't stop and look. It's very parisitcal" no shit, that's what the radio guy just said |
"Musta been 'wind shear', over..." |
If that's the case, that is fucking AMAZING, and good to hear. That plane is burned to a crisp. |
Yep. I can't think of many worse ways to go than burning. |
Drowning |
News here is speculating pilot error / windshear ( downdrafts).
caller just said he and another guy were on the highway when it crashed and they stopped and helped people down the slope away from the plane
I'll go out on a limb and assume that was a "sarcastic" use of that smiley. |
That narrows it down. |

<---- Killed in a fire in 1989. I can't say that I particularly reccommend it. Good to hear no fatalities. I promise, Lord, that I WILL listen to the little safety briefing before the next flight. |
I guess you do not frequent the site... Every death is made into a joke by smart asses who have zero respect for life that is not their own. |
Soooo...you were killed in a fire in 1989? |
Well...welcome back? |
My bad.....I spent a little too much time as a police dispatcher and we used humor to deflect the horror of some really unpleasant realities. I apologize to any I offended, it just popped out. Glad no one was lost in the accident. |
And now starts the news agencies' need to come up a with a reason for this airplane crash, in two minutes or less....facts not withstanding, since for whatever reason, Joe Public just can't wait for an orderly and thorough collection of information.
The good news is, at least the pilots appear to have survived so that they can defend themselves against the inevitable "pilot error" judgement. - Checknsix |

OK, so I'm not the only smartass here. |

Funny how the AAC (Anti Airbus Crew) jumped in before ANY facts
I guess Boeing has a better safety record? Way to prove ignorance. I am glad people lived. |
I am a proud hater of Scarebus craplanes. Ignorance has nothing to do with it. I am glad everyone lived. |
"If it ain't Boeing, I ain't going."
And I REALLY mean it. Since there have apparently NOT been any fatalities, I see no reason not to comment on the plane. Airbus touts the A340 as one of the safest planes in the sky, and one of the most modern and foolproof. Well, they how have to erases that number on the chalkboard where it says "number of days since our last airplane crashed" at the Airbus factory and replace it with a zero. Airbus' number one problem is that the computer is (sometimes) likely to try to outsmart the pilot. The resulting conflict has killed people. Airbus' stock should go down now, for a little while at least. Personally, I hope it TANKS. CJ |
I'm sorry, I haven't heard something so stupid in ages. Do tell, what is your level of experience in manufacturing large, transport aircraft? Have you worked for both Airbus AND its competitors, so as to make an intelligent assesment, or are you just running your mouth about things you do not understand? |
