If the DVD is coded "Region 1" (which is the region that Canada is in, and that DVDs able to play in Canada are coded) then yes, you can play it in your Region 1, USA DVD player.  If they're just getting it from Canada, but it is encoded in Region 2, then you'll need a region-free DVD player, or a DVD player capable of switching regions.  Somewhere on the DVD case (probably on the back) it will list the region code for that disc.  Hope this helps.
