Was in VA for the weekend, and I hit a local liquor store and the cashier proceeds to copy all my info into the PC.
Is this SOP? |
I imagine. When I buy booze they scan the back of my DL, which I assume contains all the same info as the front.
ETA: What you 'fraid of, McLovin? |
Never happened to me, but maybe it's something they do for non-VA residents?

I've bought booze in three different states: Oklahoma, Texas, and Arizona. All of the cashiers that have asked for i.d. have only looked for a birthdate and that was it. My DL has never left my wallet/hand.
Did they ask for your permission to save your info into their database system?

ETA: Although ol' Guvner Bobby was supposed to fix that...I wonder where that all wound up? |
I visited family in Indiana a couple months ago and that is the law there. If you buy beer or wine in a grocery/convenience store you MUST show I.D..I THINK they only copy the DOB but not sure of that.
My Dad,who drinks a couple beers a MONTH,had to show his driver's license to buy a 6 pack in Walmart.....he's 86 years old. This law evidently does not apply in liquor stores or taverns.....where you MIGHT be required to show I.D. |
What do the illegal shit bags do, or are they exempted from this also? Turning over your name, address, birth date and DL number/SS number seems a little extreme for buying booze.

Th same place around here that scans IDs also asks for your address to join their getting drunk club. I don't think they really keep the info. I think its just a company policy put in place to thwart McLovin's with fake IDs.

Local towns authorize liquor licenses, and stores buy them to operate. |

No, here in VA all liquors stores are OWNED and RUN by the state government. |
Never had that issue. Hell I must look so old they don't even card me anymore.
How did you pay? Not that it should matter but did you pay with a check by chance? |
Whenever I buy beer at a gas station in Greenville, VA, they always ask me for my birthday and write it down. I guess it's their way of proving that they checked ID.

No, here in VA all liquors stores are OWNED and RUN by the state government. Same in Montana.........one thing I find strange is that they don't sell beer....... |

Probably some sort of system that can tell if the DL number and the birthdate match up. Good way to get rid of people using fake IDs to buy alcohol. Good idea if it is the way I explained it.
This is why I never surrender my ID or my credit card. They can see it in front of them to verify my identity and age, but they stay in my hands.

Oh hell no. I would've asked for all info to be deleted and left. |

They do that kind of thing in my state too! It's really bad here. Terrible weather, really restrictive gun laws, dirty air, too many people. You wouldn't want to live here.
I've seen that before, but around me I rarely get asked for ID, if ever.
That's not as uncomfortable as some shady looking goon at the door of some afterhours bar doing it.

THAT sucks. I've never seen beer for sale at a liquor store around here, but I can buy as much as I can cram into my 4Runner at the grocery store. I've seen people actually do that at Longwood, four people with two shopping carts each overflowing with cases of cheap shitty beer and loading it all into one suffering Exploder. I don't know if we can technically buy "carry out" beer at the bar...I used to do it when I was in a band, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't legal. |

LOL There's a nice liquor chain in Houston called Specs, if you join their mailing list you get a member card where you get discounts, rack up points for something or another. When the cashier scans your card your name pops up on their screen. Went with a friend once and the cashier said "Hi Mr. MACD, how are you today?" friend: "WTF, they know you by name?" CSB |

I'm sure you will find some additional junk mail coming in the mail now.

Quoted: I spent 26 years of my life in Virginia. I've been here in Colorado now for about 8 months, and I'm still getting used to buying liquor at places that don't have this above the door: http://www.acc-tv.com/images/wset/news/abc_alcohol.jpg I'm still getting used to seeing liquor stores the size of Costco, and seeing Costco stores that sell liquor! It's a brave, brave new world... _MaH Take a trip to California. Should be a real shocker. |
Quoted: Quoted: Take a trip to California. No thank you. _MaH Nevada is even better. But to do either, you have to step over Utah. But for the absolute f-up in alcohol laws, NOTHING beats Texas where governments down to the precinct can make laws. The little unincorporated town of Fort Davis (Davis Mountains, north of Big Bend) is like this. On the north side of town by the National Historic Park, stores are free to sell. But down by the court house on the south end of main drive, alcohol is only sold by a private club. This precinct covers the Hotel Limpia, complete with a bar. But if you are a guest of the Limpia, you have automatic membership in the club. Outsiders can join the club to drink, something like $5 for a month membership. |

NC is state run as well "ABC" = Alcohol Beverage Control. No scan that I know of.

As I recall VA is pretty much a blue state. Wonder if they require a DL or ID to vote too or would that violate your civil rights?

At best, it's becoming purple because of the second wave of carpet-bagging Yankee morons who flee the failed policies of their homeland to beautiful Virginia, yet begin voting to implement the same failed policies there all over again. Virginia has had Democrats run the state in its past that make many of today's Republicans look like communists. No sir, Virginia's problem isn't Democrats –– it's the god damn Yankees. _MaH |
