I went through Groupon.  Got a stay at an Omni hotel in San Antonio for $125/night.  Checked in at 10am instead of the typical 3pm.

The hotel websites are ususally very competitive and AAA or AARP is usually five to ten off with no cancelation penalties before the afternoon of the reservation.



Issues with orbitz and the like is once in a blue moon you show up and they say sorry we don't have that reservation ...
