I heard this song hundreds of times in the 90s but only recently did I look up the lyrics.

Hook

John Popper is one of the better singer/songwriters of the nineties.

Post some good music.

You also know hes a huge pro-gunner, survivalist, and was busted in Washington a year or two back...

He has a tricked out suv, blacked out, bulletproofed, with wig-wags and strobe lights and he or his driver was clocked in excess of 100 mph while in full regala. Had quite a few weapons in the rig as well.

Heh.

That's what's awesome about the song. JP knew that it wasn't the lyrics of the song but that the 'catchyiness' of a song that sold CDs. The whole song is mocking that.

Brilliant really.

NVM

I hijacked my own thread.

It doesnt matter what I say
So long as I sing with inflection
That makes you feel that Ill convey
Some inner truth of vast reflection
But Ive said nothing so far
And I can keep it up for as long as it takes
And it dont matter who you are
If Im doing my job then its your resolve that breaks

Because the hook brings you back
I aint tellin you no lie
The hook brings you back
On that you can rely

There is something amiss
I am being insincere
In fact I dont mean any of this
Still my confession draws you near
To confuse the issue I refer
To familiar heroes from long ago
No matter how much peter loved her
What made the pan refuse to grow

Was that the hook brings you back
I aint tellin you no lie
The hook brings you back
On that you can rely

Suck it in suck it in suck it in
If youre rin tin tin or anne boleyn
Make a desperate move or else youll win
And then begin
To see
What youre doing to me this mtv is not for free
Its so pc its killing me
So desperately I sing to thee
Of love
Sure but also rage and hate and pain and fear of self
And I cant keep these feelings on the shelf
Ive tried well no in fact I lied
Could be financial suicide but Ive got too much pride inside
To hide or slide
Ill do as Ill decide and let it ride until Ive died
And only then shall I abide this tide
Of catchy little tunes
Of hip three minute ditties
I wanna bust all your balloons
I wanna burn all of your cities
To the ground Ive found
I will not mess around
Unless I play then hey
I will go on all day hear what I say
I have a prayer to pray
Thats really all this was
And when Im feeling stuck and need a buck
I dont rely on luck because...

The hook brings you back
I aint tellin you no lie
The hook...
On that you can rely

Listen to these lyrics while listening to the song. It'll bake your noodle.

Billy Joel did something similar back in the 70s. His was more about the industry than just the individual song

Not as subtle as "Hook," but the single for this song was cut down to 3:05

Miserable Bastard is one of John's best.  It was not on a Blues Traveler album but a solo album.

I think the title kept it from becoming a big hit, as most "Pop" stations never played it.

I saw Blues Traveler live a few weeks ago. The Power and Light district has free concerts every Wednesday, so we got there early and were 4 rows back dead center.

AWESOME show. He actually sounds just as good or better in concert than he does on CD. No digital remastering needed. The dude can wail on the harmonica and sing too.

He had an entire case of harmonicas and when he wore one out he just chucked it into the crowd. I had one literally bounce off the end of my fingers.

Politics

Popper is a member of the Libertarian Party, and has previously expressed support for the Republican Party.[He endorsed George W. Bush in the 2004 U.S. presidential election.
Popper (with and without Blues Traveler) has played at conventions,
fundraisers, and ceremonies for both Republican and Democratic
politicians. He has stated that politics do not influence his choice of performance setting.

Popper has said, "I was a bleeding-heart liberal, until I got a job" and describes himself as "a libertarian who is a Republican when pushed".Popper summed up his political position by saying "I believe in freedom
for markets and freedom for individuals, so I guess that makes me a
libertarian".

Popper has toured with the USO, both with Blues Traveler and solo. His most recent tour was in the Middle East, performing with the Band of the Air Force Reserve and Jamie O'Neal at various military camps.

He has appeared with Rock the Vote and recorded "The Preamble" for the Schoolhouse Rocks the Vote! album.

In November 2008, Popper said, regarding Barack Obama, "this is the first time I've voted for a Democrat, ever."
