Ever have a blow-out? I had one in a ford work van, late 70's model. Driver's rear. Took just a second to get control, pull over. This was out by Blackhawk, CA. I had a sign up that said all I needed was a tire-iron but not a single person stopped for 4 hours.

Yep....my old 2000 GMC Sonoma that I had while doing 70mph on the highway outside of CO Springs on the day of New Years Eve. Just pulled the truck over, changed the donut, called my buddy and told him what happened and that I'd apparently be staying NYE.

had one saturday...
rear axle on the travel trailer. not sure how long I drove on it...rim is done for. |
|
I had one in the middle of the NM desert no cell service or anyone for miles around- someone stopped to help me...didn't speak one word of English- I was so lucky he wasn't a murdering rapist too.
Another time I got two flats on one trip two hours apart from eachother...cops hooked me up both times on that trip. |

Last Saturday I had one!
Three kegs, 200Lbs of BBQ ribs, live band, hotties, it was all there!!!... |
|
I've had 3 in my life.
This one was the worst. Driving home from a jobsite with my co-worker (he's driving) Ford ranger with a cap. Left rear goes "thud"....then pop. Truck swerves instantly 180 degrees and were sliding backwards at 60 mph. Slid across 3 lanes of traffic...backwards. Thought it was all good. Then we hit the Steel Beam holing up the "Welcome to Jones Beach" sign. Sheared the beam off at the footing but not before it ripped 3' into the cap of the truck (not 10 inches from the drivers head). It acted as an incline plane and vaulted the truck into a barrel roll. We tumbled for what seemed like an eternity my head taking out the rear window and my ribs shearing of the armrest/console. We came to rest on the drivers door side and could not get out. (the beam buckled the dooe jambs tight. Motor screaming. Blood, glass, dirt oil everywhere. Was able to turn off the truck and roll down the passenger window and flop out into a good samaritans arms - before passing out. That cost me ANOTHER trip to the trauma unit and an overnight stay. Some stitches and a concussion. The other two blowouts I just pulled to the side of the road and changed the tire. |

I was driving down 45 to huntsville one time and had a Semi blow one about 15 feet away from me. I almost peed on myself. Had to get out and check the front of the truck after I nailed the tread that went flying. The Semi Driver came over to check on me and everything but my truck was fine.

I had one last week. I called the motor club and waited in the shade while a $9.00 an hour expert risked HIS life on the shoulder of I-95.

couple times in a semi.....that'll wake ya up I bet The ones on the trailer(s) aren't bad...just noisy/destructive. The one on the tractor scared the shit out of me when the cap hit the back of the cab. I pray I never blow a steer tire. |

Front left tire blew out in a Camaro at about 65 mph. Felt a shudder, saw a lot of smoke and pulled over to the emergency lane. Putting on the spare while traffic flew by inches away was the scariest part.

yep. couple weeks ago. Spare had gone flat so i had to walk to walmart to get a 12v compressor since i only keep that stuff in my truck (not anymore). I really appreciated all the people that slowed down to yell at me and throw shit, including beer bottles.

I've never had one but driving down I-40 one day a semi had a trailer tire blow out as I was passing him. I almost shat myself.
|
|
Several. I had a brand new Michelin blow out on the interstate at 70MPH, no loss of control, just pulled to the side and put the spare on. That tire was on the rear.
A Goodyear with good tread on a less than two year old car blew out while we were on the interstate doing 70MPG or so, front passenger side tire, my wife was driving. No loss of control, pulled to the side and changed it. A couple of years ago I had a worn out tire on a company owned E250 self destruct on a rural highway at about 60MPH, front passenger side. No loss of control, pulled to the side and changed it. That one dented the fender a little. |
|
Moving from Kalifornia to Jersey, I blew out one of the tires on my box trailer as I was driving through Albaqueery. Put the spare on quickly, then spent several hours tyring to find a replacement spare. Not easy to do on a Sunday...

I had a steer axle blowout a few months ago on my tractor at 65mph. I was loaded with about 40-44,000 lbs. Thank the Lord it didn't go down until I was heading for the slow lane. Once the rim hit the pavement I had to fight it to keep half my wheels on the road. That really sucked.
That's the first steer I've ever blown in almost 20 years of driving, I really hope it is the last. |

Never had one...
Most drivers have no idea what to do and will: 1. Slam on the brakes 2. Swerve 3. Roll over |
|
Bought a 1988 Firebird Formula my first year of college. Decided I needed a "cheap" something to drive to save miles on my truck.
About 2 weeks into ownership, I decide its time to see where it tops out. I take it up to about 115 or so, and the violent shaking and vibration is enough for me to shut it down. MAYBE ten minutes later, I round a curve at about 45 mph, (small country road) and BOOM, Im swapping ends (blew the left rear) and wind up in a guys driveway, backwards. Talk about pucker. If that had happened during the little speed burst before, bad bad things. |

I had a sign up that said all I needed was a tire-iron but not a single person stopped for 4 hours. A couple of them. First was in High School in my 74 Plymouth Satellite. Right front tire blew out right outside of New Haven. Quickly got control and pulled over. I managed to change the tire and be only a few minutes late for my appointment. Next was in the early 90s. I was driving my wive's 86 Chevy Cavalie (what a POS). Same right front tire blew out on the Merit Parkway (we were leaving CT for MD) at 1 in the morning. I could not get the damn tire off. Called 911 on my bag cell phone - idiots there couldn't find where I was even though I was able to pin point our spot to within 100yards. Finally around 2am a tow truck was dispatched and with the use of his breaker bar and large hammer we were able to get the tire off and replaced. Never had a complete loss of control like they show in the movies. A bit squirlley at first but predictable & controllable once under a firm hand. |

Well theres your problem, you re-used an already problematic tire. Wtf man, you should have seen that coming. |

That's the first steer I've ever blown in almost 20 years of driving, I really hope it is the last. In all the years I've done road trips, I've never seen that until today (seriously) Tractor trailer on the shoulder, driver's side steer wheel bare (not even sidewalls). Driving on aluminum must suck... There was a tread gator up the road a bit behind him but I don't know if it was his. I thought the peeled tread was mainly from retreads, and that those weren't supposed to go on the steer axle-but maybe factory steer tires can do that too... The closest I've ever come to a blowout was driving a new car ( 600 miles on the odo) on a road trip. It had low profile tires, and apparently I didn't notice the low air in one of the tires because of this. I hit a bridge expansion joint and it was enough to pop the bead off and give an effective blowout. Got the 'bang' noise and everything, at 65 MPH or so. Straight stretch of interstate, fortunately. Scared the crap out of us but no other damage. |
|
12 years ago or so, my buddy and I were on the freeway in my '94 Eclipse. I was doing about 80 around a bend in the road when my front passenger side blew. It sounded like a gunshot. The tread flew up past the window and ripped the mirror off. We managed to get pulled over safely but it scared the shit out of us.
|
|
Right rear tire exploded on my old 92 Notchback Mustang while i was doing a little over 100 MPH. Basically there was about 50% of the side wall left on the rim and nothing else, the tire cam apart so violently i initially thought i blew the rear and lost an axle. Ass got a little squirrely but i got it on the shoulder safely. Rim survived too luckily. I actually had a spare but no jack thankfully someone pulled over and offered theirs as i was out on a beach parkway and the nearest gas station was probably 20 miles away and my cell battery was dead.
Whole thing was my fault as the tire was BFG drag radial and the tread was almost gone. Being young and dumb i heated the tire before the run too so I'm guessing the belts just came through the tread and the rest was history. |

I asked the tire guy that came out to repair mine what the deal is with that. My tread also flew off like it was a cap but I knew it wasn't. He said that when a tire gets hot enough even the tread off of virgin rubber will separate like that. The tread from my tire came off and was wedged under the fuel tank. |

I used to drive delivery for living at around 25 years old....
So I'm driving a 26' box truck fully loaded with furniture, refrigerators big screen TVs etc......going about 60 MPH on the highway looking over at all the poor fuckers heading in the other direction that are bumper to bumper and mostly stopped.... All of the sudden I hear a loud Whack and felt it in my feet from under the truck on the drivers side.......So I look out the window into my mirror to see if I had hit something..... While staring out the window I notice my front drivers side tire is passing me and heading towards the divider (nothing but a grassy knoll) all of the sudden the entire truck lurches to the left and drops about a foot down towards the ground. As Im struggling to keep the loaded truck from rolling over I ease it to the side of the road.......The entire time Im watching my 250-300 lb tire head across the grassy knoll to the parked traffic on the other side....... Luckily for those bastards nobody got hurt....had the tire hit one of those cars it would have folded the vehicle in half. Tire must have been going at least 80 MPH. After walking across traffic through the broken fence I finally found the tire lodged into the side of some poor guys house. I left them a note and a phone number to call......lol. |
|
Had one this AM.
Must have been that KimChee & Chili I had for supper last night. But seriously...I've had a couple at speed. Both RR, never a front. A good reason to always have a firm grip on the steering wheel. The Ol' Crew Chief |
