Can a Blackberry phone be used without the Blackberry service? I.E. just as a regular phone.

I thought the data package was mandatory for Blackberry's? Something to do with there software?

Your wrong But kinda on the right track , Blackberry has their own data package that's tied to the phone for data useage, I have unlimited data with sprint but to use the blackberry for anything other then a regular phone I have to add another data plan . There were work arounds but I beleive they have been killed

Any BB can be used as a regular phone without data plan. However, most carriers will not sell you a new BB phone at discount price (or free) without data plan.
If you are with T-Mobile, get the phone, and drop BIS plan after a month.
