Blackberry is cutting the price of the Playbook down to $200 for the 16GB version (from $500) up here permanently.

I kind of want one, but have zero use for it.

$200 sounds a fuck of allot better than $500.

ETA - my bad, it's a "temporary price" only good to Nov 24th.

Staples in the US will have them for $200 on "Black Friday".

Apparently the new update due in February (Playbook 2.0) will allow you to download and use Android apps.

Basically, you write and compile your software once and it will run on any platform, instead of having to compile a version for each OS and each browser you want your software to run on

Can't see getting a tablet that doesn't run Android.

Most stuff gets a ROM ported to it eventually, but I don't expect that the Blackberry tablet will be a hot item in this regard. The kindle will be instantly hacked up with a bunch of different ROMs, easy to use tools, and detailed instructions in no time flat.

Even at $200 I'd be buying it for the hardware, leaving it in the box, and waiting to see if I wanted to resell it or hack it; depending on Android community support and reports. They can't win, because all of their OS and app effort is for naught. They can't sell their product without spending a bunch of money developing something that I want to throw away at the first opportunity.

People still bitching about flash

Playbooks are garbage - RIM really missed the obvious mark with it. RIM needs to drop BBOS and adopt Android to save their company. Run after the "Hardened" device market.

Their "Co-CEO" thing really has lead to poor decisions.

It's got good hardware, well for when it came out it did. Better hardware is right around the corner and if you kept track of RIM updates or lack of I'd be weary of a purchase.
If it was $100 I'd probably pick one up.

It wouldn't surprise me if 2.0 didn't have the Android App player

I also think that price drop is going to be permenant or on sale every week.

I've got one. I've got no complaints.

(Good to see it getting a price adjustment though because it was high IMO)

What is "garbage" about it?

Most of the complaining I've seen revolves around "it's not an Android device".

Uh playbooks don't have a native email client for one. A bunch of what would be useful is dependent upon you also owning a bb device. Do some googling on reviews and you'll see.

The only way BB isn't going to die is if they start making better devices that run android and use what's left of their brand power to hang on. But they're a bunch of fucktards so that won't happen.

BlackBerry sucks, period. The user interface is garbage and the product in general was made obsolete by the iPhone in 2008.

Android will surpass iPhone because of its availability on a wide variety of smartphones, its usability, and tight integration with Google products which are actually very good. For example, I no longer bother with TomTom/Garmin because Google Navigation kicks ass. Google Maps' "My Places" makes it very easy to store addresses/locations unlike TomTom/Garmin.

ahhhh but WebKit is more integral for mobile browsing and apps....thus Adobe dumping Flash.

RIM's web browser is actually built on WebKit too.

Can't wait for my company to kill these things. A different division, that uses the same IT dept, went to iphones about a year ago. Our president is technically adverse and that's being polite so we're stuck with rotten BB9300's. He won't even let us get the torch, because he doesn't like it.

I'd prefer an Android device, but I'll take anything over the BB.

Hijack over, the playbook isn't very useful if you don't have a BB. There's no native email/calendar client. The hardware might be useful for dumping an android ROM/kernel on. I've been through that with my tablet and can't say how easy/hard that will be for a device that didn't support Android from the start.

Link Posted: 11/21/2011 3:21:57 PM EDT
If they fall to $99 I may pick up one to toy with other wise nope.

I think the 2.0 update scheduled in Feb will bring native email and other fixes but man would you really want a device that took that long to get basic stuff on it unless you planned on hacking another OS on to it.
What I find hard to believe is how long to get the NDK out and choose to rely on the Android Player.

I honestly think this device is going to be killed off. I don't care what RIM says. It was advertised as the 1st professionl tablet and there's nothing professional about it. Doesn't even have autocorrect ,oh and good luck using Bluetooth headphones with it in its current state. Not supported.

No way they can take the price back up, Kindle fire $199 and the new 7" Samsung tablet is $400
