I think that post-Sept 11 WTC/Pentagon attack the news has backed off on their attack against guns and they are also reporting more self-defense use of the gun, so it doesn't surprise me that they are carrying the biathlon. Many of their readership and reporters rushed out and bought guns. |

Take a look around that website, there are some great rifles to be gandered at. |

Most shooters are not very good offhand shots. I shoot smallbore year round and after 3 years I'm just getting halfway decent. Think about it like this. Go run around your range 2 or 3 times, grab a rifle and try to hit the standard smallbore NRA target. I doubt you will be very accurate. As for the caliber, rimfire is a wonderful and cheaper alternative to centerfire. Accurate, quieter and there are some amazing rifles out there if you have the means to aquire them. I cant imagine that the crowd would be as large also if they were blasting away with .308s. Also, those groundhogs I shoot with rimfire seem to be just as dead as the ones I have shot with centerfire as long as I understand the limitations of the cartridge. IMHO every one who professes to be a shooter should have a good rimfire rifle. Rimfire shooting can make you a better centerfire shooter. |

It's a test of marksmanship, not recoil tolerance. What would be the point of using centerfires? "Oh, those wusses are shooting .300 Win Mags. If they were real men they'd be using .475 Weatherbys!" Remember, those times are in MOUNTAIN STANDARD TIME--there was a 45 minute gap between women and men's biathalon--they filled it with hockey. |

It is amazing that they shoot so well with their heart rate being up so high. Andresen had a chance to medal, and then missed 3 in his final stage. It is not hard to shoot well when you are relaxed, but after skiing a ways at altitude it is a different story.
