How subtle do you want to be? How long does it have to resist for?
You can apply something like Shatterguard. After the first couple of blows the thief may just give up and go away or look for an easier way in. |

This already guards the back of the house. The mesh from Gran Torino is a great idea, but I seem to be having trouble locating the thick stuff. Generally referred to as expanded metal mesh. The hog wire is a great idea as well, but think I like the mesh better. |
