Just picked up a zombie defense lower marked multi cal. Wanting to make this one a sniper rifle. What's the best round, and barrel to go with?

Quoted: Personally I would do a 6.5 Grendel! For a purpose built longer range AR 15 platform rifle I would use 6.5 Grendel. To reach out a little farther you could move to a 6.5 Creedmore in the AR10 pattern rifles. FWIW: I've got 6.8's but for longer range work I think the 6.5 is better. |

Quoted: Just picked up a zombie defense lower marked multi cal. Wanting to make this one a sniper rifle. What's the best round, and barrel to go with? You need to fill in a few blanks. What is the minimum distance of engagement? (i.e. sledgehammer to kill a fly ... a .50 BMG is a popular caliber but is a completely ridiculous choice for a 50 yard engagement distance) What is the maximum distance of engagement? (i.e. there are may lower calibers suitable out to 500 yards but completely unsuitable for 800 yards) What are the rules of engagement? (i.e. Is this a brain stem shot being made only under tight authorization? Or is this COD fantasy land where multiple .50 BMG's through walls with collateral deaths is OK?) How much money are you willing to spend for the complete set of tools? (Rifle will easily top $ 2,000 and can go as high as $ 12,000 under old pricing. A suitable scope is going to be well over $ 1,000. Ballistic calculator, wind meter. laser distance meter, spotting scope ... and let's not even bother with what NOD's would cost.) How much money are you willing to spend on training and practice to maintain the skills required? (Rule of thumb, 50 "scored" rounds for each planned engagement distance per week. Training and follow-up is an easy $3,000/year) How long are you willing to wait to acquire the parts/rifle to fulfill this mission? (The really good barrels, rifles, etc are now on two year wait lists and those are likely optimistic estimates.) |

What storm we talking about? Using the term "sniper" as you have is going to generate some attention. It's both vague and incorrect as you've presented it. ETA: The 5.56 is a great round. The Mk 12 style rifles are the most versatile of all AR variants. |

260 rem, or if not 260, 308 win.
Hope that lower was an ar10... ;) |

Wasn't trolling I just meant a good long distance round, lighten up a little bit.

Sniper rifles are purposed tools for killing people.
Replace "people" in the quote with "snipe". Sniper rifles are for bird hunting. |

Are you a sniper? Then it will never be a sniper rifle. I used auctionsniper on ebay, I'm a sniper. |

Quoted: Wasn't trolling I just meant a good long distance round, lighten up a little bit. Then you want a long range precision rifle. There is nothing better then the .416 Barrett, supersonic to 2500yds. |

.50 BMG
When you really care send the best. Serious answer = whatever your department issues you and authorizes you to use on duty. Similar for the military. |
|
I'd get some of those "heat seeking" rounds that bitch was talking about.
Make sure you have plenty of high caliber clips. |
|
50BMG, or if you want more of a multi shot, accuracy wise I don't think you can beat a 6.5 grendel, out of an AR15 platform.

Long distance covered 800 to 1200 yds. Now if you go by some modern definitions, long range can include up to 1 mile or more. For the traditional definition, any .30, 7mm, or 6.5mm will do the job pretty well. If you are going to the newer definition, then the .338 Lapua, .416 Barrett, or 50 BMG are your better choices. ETA: If your definition of long range is 600 yds or less, then the 5.56 or .223 with 77gn bullets would be fine. |

Personally I would do a 6.5 Grendel! Yup. Planning a 6.5, 18" barrel DMR type build someday when/if prices and availability of anything gun related stops herping and derping. |

best to choose a better rifle for sniping. like a .308 .338 .300 win mag or 30.06. or even 7.62X54R IMO a precision rifle is its own animal really. and mid powered rifles such as the .223, 5.56, 7.62 X39 etc don't cut it really.

I'm in no sporting community...I'm in a 'redress if the government becomes tyrannical' community....but we're right down the road. OP, a heavier projectile matched to a barrel with the correct twist to spin it up is the easiest way to gain accuracy and distance. On an AR-15 platform there are several caliber options each with numerous available projectiles. There's a bunch more info in the AR-15 and Armory sub-forums. |

Conventional wisdom says shoot the heaviest bullet you can with the best BC for long range accuracy.
I'm going to tell you something else. If you are looking for a super accurate rifle to shoot 600 yards and under, go light and quick. I have an upper with a 20 inch bull barrel, 1/10 twist that loves 45-52 grain bullets. The ground hog population in my AO can attest to it's accuracy, and shooting steel at 600 is a blast. It's flat shooting enough, and quick enough that wind doesnt do much at that range. |

Personally I would do a 6.5 Grendel! For a standard AR lower...^^^ this. Mine is 5.56, my fav load is 75 gr TAP, but doing a 6.5 after the panic buying dies down. You kinda walk into this mess when you said "sniper"... |

Get the one that hits the intended target without any skills - that should do fine.
When in doubt, grab .308. |
