I have the Matech BUIS in the last position on the rail, and the ACOG is butted up next to the BUIS. To get proper eye relief I have to set the stock in the first position from fully collapsed. I was looking at pictures on the internet of our troops M4 with the ACOG and it appears most have the ACOG mounted even farther toward the muzzle than I do. I tried this and I have to collapse the stock completely to get the proper eye relief. Is this normal?? One concern I have with the stock being fully collapsed is my eye is right next to the charging handle. I am concerned that if I had a case rupture that hot gases would blow out around the charging handle and into my eye (save the eye protection warning - if someone kicks in my door I don't have time to grab eye protection).

Any advice on where I should place the ACOG on the rail? Thanks!!!

If that's how you normally keep your stock set - 1 position out - then your eye relief/optic position has to fit that in my opinion. If that's what feels comfortable to you - its just fine.
And if someones suddenly kicking in my door to get to me - fuck the gasses and glasses - rather have one good eye and alive, than two good ones and be dead. Honestly I wouldn't worry about it.

ETA: Nice rig too!

Whatever eye relief dictates regardless

This.  No point in having it somewhere where you constantly adjust to an uncomfortable, unnatural position.

Thats exactly how I shoot mine, OP.

I agree with HKgnr, set the stock to where you want it first, then adjust the optic's position to your eye relief.  Don't worry too much about what the army guys do.  If you do a lot of shooting from the bench or you tend to stand straight up while shooting you will tend to want to stock longer.  If you shoot crouched down and leaning forward your nose will likely be right by the charging handle (this is how I shoot), and therefore the stock will need to be shorter.

I shoot 1 click out, so Id put it where the eye relief needs.

I usually wind up moving my optic around several times before I come up with the ideal position for me.

Lose the MATECH and move the ACOG closer to you.

As folks said, it just boils down to eye relief and your preferred head position. Most troops shoot with their heads pushed forward even if they have the stock further back, so the sight is pushed forward a bit to maintain eye relief. If you prefer a head back position you end up having your sight pretty far back on the rail.

It really does just boil down to what works for you. I tend to change my sight positions a number of times before settling on a standard spot for a particular option, and that's with fixed stocks. It's also why I prefer scopes that don't change eye relief much or at all when changing magnification.

Find your natural shooting position then get the acog 1.5 inches from your eye.

You want the buis on the rearmost slot regardless. Especially if it has a range adjustment or the bdc won't be accurate.

I wouldnt really be too concerned about a case rupture during a middle of the night home invasion. A 4x scope probably isnt going to be used if its the middle of the night and youre half asleep walking down your hallway clearing your house. I think it turns more into a instinct shooting situation between being half asleep, its dark, and trying to use a magnafying optic. Just put it where its comfortable for range and training shooting and wear eye pro.

I would stop worrying about how people in the military shoot and just enjoy your rifle.

No offense but you do understand the concept of having BUIS, right?

That's how mine is. The ACS stock was a little longer than the standard M4 stock so I had to move it in one click.

I like my TA-11

You can set it up at the front of the rail and still get good eye relief.

Put nose to charging handle where it is supposed to be and set eye relief to that, Stock length is not relevent.
There I said it!

acog is to far forward.  If I shot that rifle I'd bust my nose on charging handle.  Hard to say, but if it were me I'd move it back a slot, maybe 2.

some guys run stocks collapsed all the way because they're wearing armor, whicht adds to the length of pull. if you're shooting in normal clothes no need to compensate for that.

They can't be used with the ACOG mounted and the Matech is garbage anyway.  Speaking of how the military mounts their ACOGs, a lot of us don't use BUIS with it.

you can't exactly just flip up the BUIS and rock and roll like you do with a dead Aimpoint or EoTech. will you really be in a situation where this type of BUIS will be valuable?

If the ACOG failed for whatever reason, you can remove the ACOG from the rifle in under 15 seconds. Then you flip up the aperture on the Matech and you're good to go.

I kinda regret getting the Matech now. It seems like a bad design and the quality is not that great (lots of wobble in the aperture). I'm gonna get a Troy soon.

With the M4 and ACOG I use the BUIS. On the M16A4, I remove the BUIS and move the ACOG almost the the very end of the rail.

And Strat, email inbound to you.

1.5 inches from your eye to the optic for starters. Or until you can obtain a full field of view.
