Who would you pick as the best male singer in the pop/rock genre?

I mean somebody that can actually SING, carry notes, hit the highs and nail the lows.
Somebody that didn't need studio effects to sound good because when you hear them
sing in concert you are totally blown away with how good they really are.

Three off the top of my head would be...

Elvis

Freddie Mercury

Robin Zander

I don't care if Freddie was Bi and Rob is gay - I'm not talking about sexuality, I'm strictly talking about NATURAL GOD-GIVEN SINGING TALENT!!!

Rob is awesome. Nobody like him before, and haven't heard anybody quite like him in the past 20 years.

+1, though he needs to stop in his old age. I caught him on a late night show recently, and it pained me to see how terrible his singing has become.

I like Neil Young but as a singer he doesn't seem to have the same "warm" qualities like an Elvis, but he is amazing in concert. I guess I would have to add him to the list.

Also, Jay Black - from Jay and the Americans. Awesome range!!

Vince Clark and David Gahan right behind him.

Yeah, but you know what?  You REALLY gotta hand it to Freddy.  For a guy that was as flaming as he was, in a genre that isn't known for having the most "tolerant" fans, he did a shit load.  I mean heck, even look here on a pretty conservative "evil" () gun site, most are saying that Freddy was probably the best.  The guy was a freakin' chameleon with his voice.  Hell, even the local "classic rock" station in Baltimore did "dream band" thing a couple years ago.  Each week they would choose a different "dream" instrumentalist for the band, and finished the last week with the best lead vocal.  Freddy won no contest (and the people deciding were pretty "salty").  Queen, despite the name-hair-outfits etc. were some incredible musicians.  Dr. May's guitar playing instantly stands out as unique.

Now I do gotta agree with Bing, and I'll add Sinatra, Cole, and Torme.  After all the category is "Rock/Pop" and in their day, they were "pop"

Chris Cornell kicks so much ass on this it ain't funny.

The 1st Audioslave disk is like a "how to be the greatest singer in rock" step-by-step manual. 'Like A Stone'...what can you say? It's amazing.

Lots of other greats mentioned here too, but Cornell gets my vote.

ELVIS!

I met him on the night of July 4th, 1969 at Graceland, right after he made the film "Change of Habit."

I got 3 autographs, but no pictures due to the lack of flashbulbs on the camera. I also shot fireworks with him at Graceland on the 4th of July, 1972. Very nice, friendly, courteous fellow, but he wore height lifts in his boots making him look much taller than he really was (6' 1").

I later found out my Grandmother beat up on Elvis' Dad back in the late 1920's during a competitive inter high school basketball game in Mississippi. And yes, my entire family were Elvis groupies, but my Grandmother always considered his Dad to be just another local hick.
