I am looking for a discreet rife case.  Looking for something that doesn't scream there is a big scary gun in there.

I found this was wondering if anyone owned a battle ax.  http://hazard4.com/products/bags/battleaxe
and had any opinions.

Any other suggestions.

Looks like a really nice case, but coyote doesn't seem all that discreet.  In black it makes more sense.  Still $200 is a lot of dough for a soft case.

I would probably look at one of the take down style discreet cases or an actual guitar case.

What kind of rifle? A backpack can be a good choice.
Link Posted: 7/22/2013 6:59:20 AM EDT
I built two of the "toolbox" cases featured on ARF about 10 years ago.  Those have both served me incredibly well...

A buddy of mine carries his thompson in a violin case

Rectangular. No gun outline.

Put band and keyboard patches on it.

Yamaha Keyboards, whatever brand, and your favorite bands. People will assume that's what it is, a keyboard.

My taylor 214 (guitar) came in a "hard bag" case that's almost the exact color of the case above.

Doesn't have molle straps all over it though

How a about a cheap baseball bag. It's got a separate zippered pocket perfect for spare mags and a pocket on the bottom for a bat in case you run out of bullets.

Link Posted: 7/22/2013 7:05:26 AM EDT
I use a soft guitar case. It's red with balck shoulder straps and a carry handle.Has one big outside pouch. It's soft, but stiff enough that it holds it's shape.

Has a couple velcro straps inside that hold the rifle in place.

Holds a 16" AR with collapsible stock (extended) and a 30 rd mag inserted.I keep 3 spare mags in the outside pouch.

People ask if I play gutiar all the time-I tell them I like to play a little heavy metal now and again.

I have a violin case meant for a tommy gun that works great.  I didn't feel the slightest bit of apprehension when I walked it through a parking lot yesterday to my apartment.

I use baseball bat bags.  Pad with foam if needed
Link Posted: 7/22/2013 7:07:58 AM EDT
Do you mind if the rifle is broken down? If not, I use the LaRue Covert Case.

If you look a little rock and roll...a guitar case.

If you look like a carpenter... a toolbox

If you look like a golfer...

If you look like a softball/baseball player....

It's called "congruence"

$15 Tennis Racket bag of You have a shorter rifle or a folding stock AK.
You can even break it down in half for longer rifles if You are not anal about scratches.

Ill second the suggestion of getting get a regular rectangular hard case and slap a Zildjian sticker or two on it, everyone will assume its an instrument case.

I didn't cut foam for the second layer, i just lay my upper in there.  You want to make sure the upper will fit in the case diagonally.  I also cut a spot for 6 mags stacked up next to the lower receiver.

Rifle, 6 magazines in bottom; tray holds cleaning tools, eye/ear pro...not a bad truck gun/trunk gun case.  Plus, it's easily lockable.

I have found that my broken down suppressed SBR fits into a dell laptop bag.
Lower in the rear compartment, upper+mags+silencer in the laptop compartment.

It works nicely since I work in IT.

I use a 40$ padded soft guitar case I got from Daddy's Junky Music. It works just fine....

The battle axe seems nice but is very expensive and kind of bulky looking.

Stinger missle box.  No one will think you're carrying a rifle.

I don't have a 'battle ax', but I can vouch for Hazard 4's quality.

2 years ago, I bought their 'ditch' briefcase and I use it everyday to carry my laptop and a plethora of other stuff. Outstanding product. Well designed, quality worksmanship and attention to detail.

I wasn't aware of the 'battle ax' until your post....but now I'll be getting one.

here's an example

A friend of mine used to travel with all his arms and accessories packed in Pelican (or similar) cases that he had stenciled in large letters: "Smith's Sanitation Service". He always kept a liberal coating of mud on them as well.

Nothing that great really, but the look on the guy's face when he got on the elevator and realized there

were three guys in there with rifles was pretty funny.  I think we told him were in town for target shooting

or something.

The AR15.com covert bags rock. The black is much more stealthy than the LaRue bags, and they are only 60 bucks. However, they are out of stock right now.
Link Posted: 7/23/2013 3:42:47 PM EDT
Does anyone have the 5.11 COVRT M4? It seems to me to be the best AR in a back pack option.

Is it worth the $100+
Link Posted: 7/23/2013 3:47:08 PM EDT
Polish under folder AKs fit into a paint ball gun bag. For my AR I use a cheap beat up tool box.

I have one too. If you don't mind the "thrown down the driveway" look you can fit two rifles and 4 mags in it.
I even have AFGs, a scope on one and an EoTech on the other. It is like a keyboard case when carried around.
If you get lazy and just toss the gun in assembled only 4" or so of barrel protrudes

Not black or an earth tone.

No molle.

Not rectangular.

No mag shaped pockets.

It doesn't scream "GUN!"

Here is the thing, a truly Covert/Discreet bag should not only have no relation to the shooting sports(coyote tan, PALS webing, velcro) it also should not be something that is of value to the average walk by thief. The street thief looking for something to pawn for a quick buck is MORE interested in your guitar/Baseball gear/etc then he is your gun. A ratty backpack or gym bag draws no attention from anyone, unless you look like you would never work out.
