An armored vehicle is a valuable tool. Soft cars offer horrible cover.

Aren't they used a lot to move innocents out of a dangerous area?

They can be.

Most police departments can only afford one or two armored vehicles but when you need one, you need one.

Berkeley

One main objection, said university spokeswoman Janet Gilmore, was "the look of the vehicle itself, the military style of it.

Do the surrounding counties and city police have an APC that Burkley can call upon in needed? Our local paper had a field day a few years back when it was found out our local PD stores their APC in the same lot (well, the lot nextdoor)  as the one of the county sheriff departments APCs, even though one of the reasons the PD listed for wanting one was the unavailability of one if needed from surrounding sources.

Police spokesman Lt. David Hughes said it is available for mutual aid to Berkeley and other cities if needed, and called it "an absolutely great vehicle."

That'd be a yes.

So its not like Berkeley couldn't get one if needed, that is good. Even if a PD/SD has an APC it is worthless if it isn't around when needed (see North Hollywood shootout.)

Mutual aid fails often...different radio nets, command and control, SOPs, and so on.

Their police force should give them the exact police force they ask for...look pretty, offend nobody, and focus on being nice and non military above all.

Hey- just give B.A. a torch, some tin, and a few 55 gal drums and you'll have your armored car.

Oh I see.  So they'll use one of the icky trucks from another agency if they REALLY need it.

Long beach used theirs yesterday on a barricaded gunman call. Used the armored vehicle to inject tear gas into the house then when the suspect ran out a K-9 took him down.

Saving lives with "tanks" and land sharks FTW!

Does anyone make an armored car that looks like an old VW van?
