...and what does this mean for the civilian market & AR???

Would you get a civilian version of the XM8?

Does it make more sense to get an AK variant, a 5.56mm one spoecifically, since you'll have ammo compatibility + greater reliability?

Thoughts?  Looks like it will be adopted as an M4 supplement replacement first in '05...

Very interesting...

I would buy one, but I wouldn't sell my AR to get one.

the charts pictured here are fucked up

M4:
- 8.85lbs [red]no f'in way[/red]
- (price, for military, carbine only) $900 [red]not even to civilians[/red]
- reliability: <6,000 rounds with regular cleaning and lubrication [red]yeah.. without cleaning and lube.. not with[/red]

XM8:
- component service life: >20,000 rounds (M4 only 8,000)
- reliability: 20,000 rounds without cleaning and lube without stoppages or parts failures

thats just the first couple out of many

As much as I am a fan of H&K products, I would not get an XM8.  I think they are ugly.

Now they're making space guns that make ARs look like K98s.
Looks like a robust weapon.  But I'm just too traditional.

Even *IF* the armed forces switch to the XM8, us lowly civies will never see one offered to us. Maybe some bastardized SL8 type thing or a neutered version, but who want's that.
I'll take my AR's thank you very much and I am working towards an M16 as funds allow. [:D]
The AR15/M16 is the last civilian offering of a military weapon we will ever see.

IF there is a civilian version

and why get one if you have a G36 clone?

As a civilian, I can say that for my part, if they offered it to me, I'd turn it down.

I am confidant there will be one, and because my collection is to consist of a copy of every civilian available firearm possible (except any glockb)

Who gives a rat's ass what it looks like???

If it's lighter, more adaptable, and more reliable than the M16 family - why not use it?

HK makes it seem that the Army has already adopted it for limited procurement as an M4 replacement in '05...

As would I. I actually like the way it looks [shock], and it seems to be very controlable from the video I have seen.

However.

I DO NOT think that it does anything significantly better than an AR15/M16. I would not give up my AR for one, and I dont see it replacing the M4/M16.

I remember hearing the same story about the M16 when it was first issued to troops in VietNam. From what I heard the story goes that they didn't need cleaning kits & supplies because they were suppose to be so trouble & maintence free. I withhold my judgement.

[Ahnold Terminator Voice] "A Laser Pulse Rifle in the 20 Megawatt range........" [End Ahnold Terminator Voice]

No thanks.......too much plastic.

It does remind me of "STARSHIP TROOPERS" though.

What's next?

I'd buy it in an instant.

But I think for the forseeable future all XM-8's would be offered by HK only. There wouldn't be the robust, competitive market that exists for AR clones.

I hope they're developing a new 5.56 round to go with it, because the muzzle velocity out of the 12.5" carbine barrel is going to be about 2800 fps, and a whole lot lower out of the 9" compact carbine barrel.  That's going to give you a pretty short fragmentation range.
