I've been keeping busy carving some AK furniture, just for the hell of it.

The SAR-2 is wearing Black Walnut, one of the grips is Honduran Red Mahogany.

I would cut the part that connects this stock kinda like this:

or would that make it too weak?

It would break, besides, it was the prototype for a Romak III replacement. The final version was made from Baltic Birch, stained to match the hand guards, made my client very happy.

I think someone makes an A1 stockset out of wood. Remember seeing it on the boards before.

I saw that Romac III with the Baltic Birch.

The grip was better than the original that came with the gun. Its contoured for better grip and handling.

Also the pictures really don't show the real finish on the black walnut parts. That AK looks awsome with all the parts assembled.

You guys should see the differences between all the different wood grips. They need their own display case.

do you buy the wood already prepared and start carving away or do you go completely from scratch??

i run my own small tree removal business... 4th season in, im 23... ive never had any experience in woodworking ( unless u ask my ex g/fs )

but ive always wondered... how do you dry out the wood without it cracking ??

cause i could come up with alot of good oak and black walnut... i take out alot of trees in the twin cities. birch too...

I found it at K-Var, and waited two years for them to get in more 22mm sight bases.

I got the wood from a place called Highland Lumber, out of their scrap bin actually, The wood on that rifle cost me $2.00. A little bit goes a long way when doing AK furniture.

In the case of the rifle pictured, I laminated two 3/4" boards to get the correct thickness.
in the future I'm going to have to buy some thicker stock.

In the case of the Baltic Birch, I ordered a 20"x30" sheet in 3/8" thickness, cut the rough pattern out, alternating direction so as make the grain match. I then glued and clamped the 4 or 5 pieces with Titebond III, its all carving and sanding after that.

Maybe I'll offer a Romack III stock, if I start selling my work.

Still have the pattern I made, though it would not be cheap.

I like the way the original looks, besides the OPs version is a thumbhole stock which means someone in a "ban" state could swap out the stock pistol grip for the thumbhole stock and then add an evil feature such as an FS or bayonet lug.
