Got a $25 gift certificate at Blockbuster for Christmas so I have rented all 5 volumes of Band of Brothers, just finished episode 6.......I must say that this is THE BEST war movie/series that I have ever seen. Tom Hanks did an awsome job on it. Any other opinions?

|
Yeah I got an opinion, go buy it! I got it from my wife as a new daddy gift. Ten discs in all and it came in a sweet tin, and I must say, I loved every second of that mini-series. I hope there's another one with maybe a different company since they already exhausted the Easy Company series, I just can't get enough.

amen. No BUY it. On DVD. Buy a DVD player if you don't have one.
By and far the best mini series production of all time. |

Check on eBay for it. I bought a pre-release set including shipping for $90 on eBay and it was well worth every penny.
Do not pass go, simply BUY the boxed set you will not regret it! The 10 episodes are 2 episodes per DVD. The sixth DVD contains commentaries, a "making" video, and a "video diary" by Ron Livingston (the actor who played CPT Nixon) that documents the making of the movie from his perspective. All this AND a cool tin can! |
|
I got it from my lovely bride, along with a DVD player, for Christmas. Neat little tin box. I've watched four episodes so far. It's a great series - so far, episodes 2 and 3 are the best, but the first one, with the training, was very good as well.

I have a BIG QUESTION about Episode Six - 'Bastogne'
In this episode, around December 25, 1944, they show a flight of multi-engined bombers over Bastogne and they appear to be dropping bombs on Bastogne! It also appears that the American defenders are putting up search lights and anti-aircraft fire at these planes! Tell me this is simply a stupid mistake. The Germans were not into formation bombing over Bastogne at this point in the war! And the Americans were certainly not flying at this point in the battle. It was visibility zero due to fog and snowstorms! The fog, etc., lifted on December 26 and then the USAAF broke loose with all Hell! Am I right, or am I mistaken about this? Sunday, December the 16th 1944. Everything is quiet and the people of the Ardennes have their mind set on the first Christmas since the liberation of Belgium. Suddenly hell breaks loose. Hundreds of German artillery weapons try to take with an unseen destructive power the American positions in the Belgian Ardennes. A total of 250.000 soldiers, accompanied by a 1.000 tanks try to march through the Ardennes. Their goal : first take Bastogne, head for the Meuse river and then push to the north of Belgium to take Antwerp and its strategic harbor.
Bastogne was bombed by the German troops from the 18th December onwards and encircled since the 20th of December. The town was defended by the 101st Airborn Division under the command of General A.C. McAuliffe. During a total of six days Bastogne underwent a terrible siege. In the neighbouring villages of Neffe, Marvie and Champs terrible battles take place during which numerous soldiers from both armies fell in the cold snowed-under hills of the Ardennes. At 11.30 am on December the 22nd, the Germans ask Bastogne to surrender. http://www.trabel.com/bastogne/bastogne-battleforbastogne.htm |

Thanks, 82ndAbn, but I know that Bastogne was seriously devestated by artillery fire from the German troops!
I was simply wondering about the air raid by multi-engined bombers.... That quite upset me and I told Brother Nick, as we were watching it together, that the scene was totally bogus! There was no large scale German air raid on Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge! Am I right? Eric The(Indignant)Hun[>]:)] |

Map on the linked page
The terrain was the dense Ardennes Forest. The weather was chilly mist and fog, so that Allied air support was nullified until December 23. (In fact, one of the German plans was named Herbstnebel or Autumn Mist.) In addition, ground visibility for the troops was often very low, due to the trees and fog. The dense forest had very few roads, none of which were large. Traffic jams on both sides of the front were a major problem for both Armies. On December 23, the weather cleared, and Allied planes finally filled the skies in support of the besieged American troops. (Some of the GI's had wondered why they saw German planes before that, despite the conditions, but saw no American planes.) Correct, no major air campaign by the Germans But what about Bastogne? In popular thinking, the Battle of the Bulge is synonymous with the Battle of Bastogne. This is very unfortunate, since it ignores the real military keys (holding the northern shoulder and holding St. Vith) to the defeat of the Germans. Journalists hungry for some sign of American success at stopping the German onslaught played up the defense of Bastogne, where Gen. Anthony McAuliffe (101st Airborne Division) said "Nuts" to a German surrender demand and where the Third US Army (10th Armored Division) broke through the German Seventh Army's buffer to reach the surrounded town on Day 3 of the Battle of the Bulge. This was truly heroic stuff. But from a military strategy point of view (and this can easily be seen on the map above), while Bastogne was a strategically important major road junction for sustaining the attack, it was on the periphery of the attack and well behind the initial front lines. The German plan was to have the panzers bypass Bastogne and let the later echelons of infantry and artillery units clean it out. And the panzers did succeed in bypassing Bastogne, so that their plan in that sector was on schedule. As a source for rallying U. S. spirits, the defense of Bastogne and McAuliffe's "Nuts" were a success. But from a strategic perspective, the German fate had already been sealed at St. Vith, when they could not take that critical supply center on Day 2 - nor on Days 3, 4, 5, and most of 6. Bastogne did not become surrounded by forces intent on taking it until the night of December 21, Day 6 of the Battle of the Bulge. And the famous "Nuts" did not come until December 22, Day 7. Heroic as the deeds of the defenders of Bastogne were, the defense of Bastogne is a very important secondary element but not one of the true strategic keys to the German failure. I got two of the Band of Brothers Box sets (in the tin) for christmas from diffrent folks and instead of returning one if someone wants to trade it out for other stuff and save some cash Im game -- Mags-parts-whatever.

I was waiting for the series after reading about it, bought the book as they always give a much deeper insight.
Excellent series alltogether. "We´re Paratroopers, Lieutenant. We´re supposed to be surrounded" |

My missus gave me the DVD set for Christmas. I once thought Lonesome Dove was the best mini-series ever made. Band of Brothers has eclipsed that western as the best ever.
Damn...just noticed...1500 posts! Hey Hun...watch out! [;D] |

Santa (Wife) put it under the Christmas tree for me.
I'm part way thru disk 2 This was one of the best books I've ever read. |

I asked for it for Christmas but didn't get it.
:( I did see it at sams club for $77. I will go buy it once i have all credit cards paid off from Christmas. |

I got mine from Amazon Canada a month or so ago. It was the cheapest then with a coupon and free shipping.
http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00006CXSS/701-4868232-7357130 $99 CDN is about $63.92 US If you can dig up a coupon code, you can get it even cheaper. |

Got the box set of DVDs for Christmas from P&M. They knew I wanted it but would balk at the price tag. Also got the LOTR dvd special edition [bounce]
I had seen a few eps on HBO (Bastogne & the last 2> where they liberated the camp & captured the Eagle's Nest) decided the DVD was on my 'to buy' list. |

Ya' might want to check out Costco. I think I saw it there for $69.00 a couple of weeks ago. Just checked e-Bay. There's a bunch for sale. But you gotta' know what you're bidding on. Read the descriptions before you bid. |
|
I ordered it from Amazon.com last Friday night and it got here yesterday morning. $77.99 delivered.
I watched the first four episodes yesterday. AWESOME!!! Now I know why you all raved about it when it was on TV. |

Watching BOB on HBO earlier this spring gave me the urge to get a M1 Garand, shot a JCG match at my local range, and about 3 months later it showed up, Mfg in June 1945, still had the lockbars, orginial bbl, and uncut op rod, on it it, a peice of history, (although I doubt mine ever left the states) Now, I want another M1!! BOB is probably the best mini series i've ever seen. One thing I noticed, quite a bit of detail went into the uniforms/equiptment everyone was wearing, and where did they get all the allied/german armored equipt?

My wife and I finished renting the series about two weeks ago. We tell everyone who hasn't seen it, they must. The final tape of the series that interviewed the actual living soldiers just brought me to tears. These guys are my heroes. My grandfather passed away in 1985. He only told me one story from his service. I wish he would have told me more. These stories need to be kept alive.

We watched three hours of it Monday and the rest of it New Years Eve. Much better than going out. The wife loved it as well. Really a great production.

I am reading the book right now, very good. I aould also recommend people read "Citizen Soldier" by Ambrose too.
I still have to see the DVD's. I think maybe for my birthday. |

I was watching a Documentary about Gabby Gabrieski [SIC]and it mentioned the German Luftwaffe making a last ditch attempt and throwing nearly 1000 airplanes into the skies during the Battle of the Bulge (I am not a history major and do not know if the siege of Bastogne was happenning at the same time) Or maybe the search lights were Beacons for supply drops? I bought the set for $75 after taxes (I was at Best Buy and I bought a coupon from a buyers club member for $5 25% off) The movies are great (I just wish they would have had more combat [as I recall Bastogne got pretty hot] < maybe Easy company got away without a major encounter? I really loved the movies but now I have to wait for the next WWII movie to come out. It was sweet how it showed that these paratroopers were able to REALLY experience history in the making (from D-Day to the Eagles nest)< I love movies like this that show that a small unit can have a big impact on History. It was like watching Forrest Gump (The right place at the right time.) SCREW THE WINE I'LD OF GONE RIGHT FOR HERRMAN GOERING'S GUN COLLECTION!! |

Just picked up the complete DVD set at BJ's Club. Will start watching it at work.
|
|
I also think they could have pulled off a big bomber raid on Batagone. Remember that in Dec. 1944 the Germans pulled off a huge air raid on Allied air bases in Belgium and France and destroyed at least 500 planes on the ground (mostly P-47s and P-51s).
