Several crude bombs exploded and one was disarmed this morning at Grand Junction homes located miles apart.
No injuries were reported.
Grand Junction police are investigating explosions at 816 Mazatlan Drive, 2975 Summerbrook Drive and 2344 1/2 Rattlesnake. A bomb squad disarmed a bomb at 2256 Knollwood Lane and another device was found in the 600 block of Seranade Street at 9:41 a.m.
Linda Bowman of the police department said the bombs were identically built, black office-style trash cans covered in silver duct tape.
The bomb at Summerbrook Drive was placed in front of the garage door of the vacant residence. The explosion about 7:30 a.m. scorched the front of the garage door and melted the vinyl siding.
“It was a big, bright flame,” said a neighbor who asked not to be identified. “It was just a horrible, scary thing.”
Police disarmed the Knollwood Lane bomb when a resident spotted the unusual container in the driveway and contacted authorities.
Anyone seeing similar devices should call 911 immediately, Bowman said.
