I wondered this too. However, I imagine with tire chunks hanging from the landing gear, the intent is to not risk trying to raise the gear, and also to get back on the ground in case the blown tire has caused other critical damage. And you certainly wouldn't want to fly to the destination in a gear down configuration.

Duals on each leg. It isn't going to crash. Might not even smoke.

Now if it were a Scare Bus with its twisting nose wheel and that nose wheel didn't fully deploy, forcing the wheel to skid sideways, it would be all smokey and sparky but AFFF takes care of it.

Funny. Talking heads blabbing, and the plane lands in the background.
Link Posted: 7/22/2010 9:21:51 AM EST
Stupid ass shit! Circling to burn off fuel instead of going to destination to preform the same landing there. Everyone will be fine, its a blown tire not an engine falling off.
Link Posted: 7/22/2010 9:22:01 AM EST
great news.... landed safley

Landed, no problems.

Good deal

You know losing an engine (the mounts are break-away in case of imbalance) isn't that much of an issue either. Losing an engine and all three hydraulic systems is an issue.

Like the Ford Exploder controversy, a flat tire isn't a big deal.

Sir

I respect your intelligence and dare I say even wisdom.

If I were on that plane it would damnfuckingwell be considered a crash landing in my book.

No, he was on holiday at Neverland.
Parents were too embarassed to admit they let their kid hang out with PedoJackson, so they concocted an even more fantastic story of the ballon ride.

They were tracking the wrong plane.

Blowing a tire can cause bad things.

Easier to fix that aircraft in ATL, than sending mechanics and parts AOG to PDX

I thought it had landed? Now waiting again?

The news is becoming more incompetent every day.

Well you may think it is stupid but that just shows you know nothing about aircraft tires and "Altitude."

If the tire that was damaged, blew, damaged one of the adjacent tires and the aircraft continued to climb to altitude you could have a VERY LARGE KA-BOOM in the wheel well.
Ask me how I know. Was ground crew on an air force RC-135. The aircraft took off and there was a tire defect/damaged tire. We think it rolled over FOD on take off. When the aircraft "ALMOST" reached operation altitude the tire blew. You would not believe the damage to that air-frame. The crew was lucky to get back.

the reason you dont continue to destination is because you do not retract the gear! And because the tire debris can cause damage to flight control surfaces and a bunch of other shit

Plus, they also mentioned that Atlanta :

A. Has a longer runway.
B. Better emergency preparations.

Don't forget that a tire going at 200psi probably f'ed the brakes, hydraulic lines, anti-skid transducer, etc in the area.
