With effect from the end of the 2013 season, BMW Motorrad will terminate its commitment in the FIM Superbike World Championship in order to strengthen the customer sports programme.

Maybe the S1000 just turned out to not be profitable enough.

Going after the little bike market in Asia is quite the different direction, just hope they don't follow Hondas lead and just start making boring bikes that aren't nearly as good as they made 20-25 years ago and then stick them in the US market.

Kinda irks me a bit.  WSBK is some of the best racing around nowadays, and BMW has become an excellent foil to the great Aprilia and Kawasaki teams.  Sucks to lose a contender like that.

"Strategic realignment"... pah.

Sad to see them go, especially as they have improved quite a bit since their 2009 debut......moving steadily up from sixth to last years 2nd in the manufacturer's standings. Currently 3rd, I believe.

As for riders tho, they haven't been able to hit that championship top step, and I'm sure that it is a metric shit ton of money to try and compete with the rest of the field only to stand on the lowest step of the podium.

Bummer

On a related note, however, KTM announced that they may pop up in WSBK in another year or two. Here's hoping!

I'm pretty sure they'll be a Italian run team running BMW's with the factories support.
