BMW x5 SUV, are these vehicles worth a shit?

Is the all wheel drive as good as a selectable 4 wheel drive?

I've owned 5 BMWs and I just bought a 08 X5. These SUVs or SAV as BMW refers to them are nice for moderate stuff. I wouldn't be caught doing crazy off road shit in it but the all wheel drive system is awesome. I got mine because I like to board and ski with the family since my truck is 2wd its like a fucking sled on ice and in the snow. I had a 08 528i that I traded in for it. The 3.0 engine is legendary and will last forever. The first bimmer I had was a 91 5series it had a 3.0 in it and ran great and I never had an problems out of it. The big thing about BMW for me is the quality of their vehicles and the great customer service.

Having sold both at a high-line dealership, I can say that you'll probably be much happier with a Range Rover Sport.  That being said, with either the RR or the X5, invest in decent tires if 4WD performance is of any concern to you.  The tires that come from the factory most luxury SUVs are pretty much for pavement only.
Also, since the 3.0 is the most basic X5 model, make sure the one you're looking at has all the options you want.  I still remember the '05 X5 3.0 that sat on our lot for nearly 5 months because it had a tape deck and no CD player.

Edit:  If you're looking at the current model of the X5 and not the previous body style... you shouldn't have the delusion of putting anything larger than a cat in the 3rd row seat.

I have a bmw 650i and am a big fan of bmw in general but for me the x5 is worthless. Its cargo area is to small for too large dogs unless you put down the seats.  Its to small to take three adults on a weekend camping and shooting trip. Between guns ammo and gear. My cargo area in the suburban was jammed. Clearence for trails is iffy and the highway tires went suited well for that roll.

So for me I love bmw but the x5 is to small to be practical for any utility use I would use it for. With that being said im sure they drive great

This is a good one....I actually looked at Range Rover Sports before buying my X5. The thing that ran me away from Range Rover was their customer service and warranty! The Range does have a awesome 4wd system but my main concern was the price of any of that cool crap breaking. With BMW I have all of my stuff covered and I have dealt with them before so that was a comfort that I had in dealing with them.

The LR3/4 and Sport have actually been much more reliable than other Land Rover products in the past, and the LR2 has a lot of Volvo under the hood so it isn't too bad either.

That being said, I'd either lease a brand new one and turn it in before the warranty is up, or buy a certified used one from an LR dealer and get the factory warranty out to 75k.

Yeah, an X5 won't be good for that. X5 is good for being safe, that's about it.

That 6 is sick. It is true if you are doing a lot of hauling and stuff like that it probably won't be practical. I have a quad cab tundra that I drive daily its my workaholic and I've sighted in a many rifles out of the back of it.

Times have changed since they were bought out.  When I was selling them until mid-'07, the CPO warranty was 75k miles.  Lame.

Over weight or under powered your choice.

AWD is not 4WD.  It's nice for pavement and light off road.  A while back Range Rover's had BMW engine and transmission before Ford got there hands on them.

It's nice to tool around town with the wife.  Don't expect to pound around in the mud with it.

You should look into 70,000 service on the x5 really look at it. The egr valve is replace and it is not in the valve cover, overflow bottle replaced and so on iirc. There are issues with egr plugging in cold climates and hydro locking motor with oil.

Yeah it does ride better than the 2500. I have one of those out in washington. Its actually a work vehicle and we take it up to mt rainier and have a lot of fun in it.

Tall wagon.  Good for trips to the mall, but not home depot.

Their AWD system is great and they drive like a 5 series sedan (on which they are based).  The 3.0 I6 is a great motor, but it gets sluggish when asked to tow stuff.  Like any BMW, it likes to wear out suspension parts and brakes faster than other cars.  Maintainence is key, which is why it is free for 4 years on a new BMW.  If buying used, ensure it has records.  It will handle light off road duty and shitty weather just fine depending on tires.  Repairs get insane once warranty is up.  Recommend leasing if you change vehicles often.

Highly recommended, but so are all BMWs.  The X5 in a V8 is a beast.

I have known five people whom have had BMW autos, they were all money pits. They were so bad in fact you could not give these folks another BMW product. YMMV
