All this recent talk of MREs tempted me to break into my stash.

For your culinary pleasure:

In the pouch.

The stove.

The completed meal.

Mmmm, mmmm good.

I think that makes the first time I've ever seen the contents of an MRE placed on a plate lol

Definitely my favorite thing about MREs.

Link Posted: 8/27/2005 8:43:43 AM EDT
The 'beefsteak' is one of the nastiest MREs.

More like "extra salty brown SPAM" than beefsteak.

Actually, I was hungry and it was edible. Others are certainly better.

Did they paint the grill marks on the meat?

I love that beverage base powder. Lime is my favorite.

I wish I would have grabbed one off the shelf before coming into work.

The shame!

A dinner pic of an MRE with no weapons what so ever.

I have never had an MRE, but long ago I had some of these:

C-rats! Man, I remember eating those when I worked at a mil surplus store in junior high. I can almost taste the John Wayne cookies now. I think I still have a few of those P-38 can openers around.

That chicken in thai style sauce looks good. And interesting.
Link Posted: 8/27/2005 5:40:20 PM EDT
I never use the heater. I dont want to bring out too much taste. The only thing that I really dont like is the rice.
Link Posted: 8/27/2005 5:41:43 PM EDT
I liked the beef w/ teriyaki sauce. Worst I had was country captain chicken.
Link Posted: 8/27/2005 5:55:24 PM EDT
DVDTracker, that last one looks so horrible that I wouldn't even give that to the dog

Beefsteak meal is a pice of flaming shit. Chicken with salsa and veggie burger is where its at.

MREs have gone to shit in the last 3 years or so. they are 100# ethnic now. in my opinion the MRE menu reached its zenith in 2000. mmmmm chicken and rice!!!!

The veggie burger tastes more like meat than most of the real meat entrees.
Link Posted: 8/28/2005 4:21:09 AM EDT
Jambalaya is definitely my favorite as you get m+ms with it, and if you put tobasco in it you can get it so spicy you can't taste it. Also sort of strange that putting an MRE on a dinner plate makes them look so unappetizing.

+1 on the Chicken with Salsa and the Veggie burger tasting better than the 'real' burger. Veggie burger with BBQ and the cheese with bacon spread was great.

Where's the "Omelet w/Ham"?

Late 80's/early 90's wre the good ones.
Link Posted: 8/29/2005 5:19:36 PM EDT
The ethnic ones survive the MRE treatment because they're so heavily spiced. I mean, the hot dogs were atrocious, and the cheeseburger (beef patty) and beefsteak are pretty mediocre. But stuff like enchiladas and chili are meant to be made with shitty cuts of meat anyway and still taste good, so the change over to "mystery MRE meat" doesn't hurt it all thet much.

My next culinary delight slated for later this week:

Here's hoping for lots o' hot sauce.

Yea really.

I never ate the canned rations, but its funny how the soldiers think the MREs are so bad.

They only get bad on about day 30

The Army has to feed the vegitarians that join up (there arent any vegan meals, IIRC, so those nuts are out), so there's several of the no-meat meals in each case. I heard one drill sgt yelling at recruits that he knew there were only two vegitarians in the company, so once those two got their meals, nobody was to complain about not getting the right food.
