EA AND DIGITAL ILLUSIONS ANNOUNCE BATTLEFIELD 2142 FOR PC
All-new Title from the Award-winning Battlefield Franchise to be set in the Future

CHERTSEY, UK – March 22, 2006 – Fight an all-out war for survival in the year 2142. Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: ERTS) and Sweden-based developer, Digital Illusions, today announced development of the next installment in the award-winning BattlefieldTM franchise, Battlefield 2142TM. The highly anticipated first-person shooter is scheduled to ship worldwide this winter for the PC.

The year is 2142, and the dawn of a new Ice age has thrown the world into a panic. The math is simple and brutal: The soil not covered by ice can only feed a fraction of the Earth's population. Some will live, most will die. In Battlefield 2142, players will choose to fight for one of two military superpowers in an epic battle for survival, the European Union or the newly formed Pan Asian Coalition. Armed with a devastating arsenal of hi-tech assault rifles, cloaking devices and sentry guns, players will also do battle using some of the most imposing vehicles known to man. Massive battle Mechs wage fierce combat on the ground, while futuristic aircraft rule the skies. When facing one of these new behemoths, players will need to use their wits and an arsenal of new countermeasures like EMP grenades to level the playing field.

"Battlefield has long been synonymous with innovative, best-of-breed online multiplayer action," said Sean Decker, Executive Producer, DICE. "By stepping into the future with Battlefield 2142, the team at DICE has reinvented the rules of engagement for the next century."

Team play features allow up to 64 players to enter the action on the front lines as part of a formal squad, or work behind the scenes in Commander Mode to direct the strategic assaults of their teammates. With in-game success, players increase their rank and unlock awards, including new weapons, medals and more, delivering the most comprehensive and flexible persistence in the Battlefield universe to date.

I'm not really sure about this version, but that said I do like the little aerial drone /UAV it looks like you can control. The Mech's Apache style sensor suite looks kinda cool.

It looks good but I don't think it's a good direction for the franchise and name. I hope I'm wrong with my reservations.

well, where can they go? Only the future...

Mods have already taken care of themes like pirates and civil war, although they sucked and older themes dont work well because of the  lack of technology and vehicles :/

*edit: whoops missed vid in first post

Looks roughly based on events "predicted" to begin in 2012. There is also another trailer out there somewhere that was a "rumored BF3" trailer about a month ago. That video looked very similar, with battlefield style combat and bipedal tanks.

Hopefully the "invisible guy" was a sniper. The sniper class in BF2 severly lacks discreetness and ability to blend with surroundings. Take away the ability to easily spot the sniper in urban combat and give them something other classes don't have (the other classes already have accuracy in bf2). Also, I hope they add the ability for a certain class to build stuff. Similar to the old team fortress engineer.

*edit again: found the "leaked clip"

Thats really cool. I liked the trailer, and I like the story that it has, a nice teotwawki situation.

Also think its pretty cool how they set it 200 years after BF1942, and the little BF1942 theme music at the end of the trailer.

I take it computer video games have improved since the last time I played one: Wing Commander in 1990.

Great.  Another game pumped out behind schedule for Christmas so support and updates for the previous ones, which didn't work right anyway, can be discontinued.

Good luck hoping for a BF2 mod.

No more EA for me.

What? No United States in this game? Just Europe and Asia?

WTH?

Definitely not interested. BF2 still has lots of issues, and EA isn't interested in fixing them. They just crank out an expansion pack or two. Boycott EA's shitty business practices.

If you haven't run across issues you're either very lucky, or not playing that much.  Ever blast a friendly  because he had an enemy uniform and red enemy name tag? Ever have an anti-tank missile pass through a vehicle coming straight at you, and from only maybe 50 feet? (no, not lag-related)? YES it's a fun game, issues or no, but there's alot of glaring issues that EA doesn't feel like fixing, because it'd cost money, and there's no shortage of suckers to buy that new expansion pack (that's also riddled with bugs).

You get the quality of programming you're willing to pay for. I don't expect flawless perfection; that'll never happen, but when you have lots of people complaining about the same issues on the various forums, and they never get fixed...

Cool. Very cool..

BUT...

There are, as other posters pointed out, "issues" with this series. And from what I have read here and elsewhere, EA's "support" sucks.

I have been trying to get into BF2 with my ChareltonHest account for weeks with no luck. It seems I have forgotten my password supposedly, and I can't for the life of me get it to work.  I have tried "forgot password", repeatedly changed it, ect..  Nothing.

Note: On AR-15.com, I assume you must be a member to get an avatar or tagline?

Big +1!

Still no easy way to support local LAN co-op. No other modes than "Assault". Crashes all the time at the LAN parties I go to.

I don't play online and the singer player sucks. 16 palyer maps only. No way to get the unlocks unless you play online.

I was looking forward to this game after playing BF:1942, but it has been a huge pile of poop.

This is true. We need to get people to stop buying from companies that put out products with so many flaws. The companies don't have alot of incentive to test their product enough before shipping it out because they know people will buy it anyways (and if we are lucky they'll issue a patch or 6 to slowly tweak the product). If people were unwilling to accept crapola coded games, maybe things would change a bit.

I can just imagine how bad the Mech camping will be. No one is going to want to  run around as infantry. EVERYONE will be camping and waiting for a mech. TKing galore.

Forgive me, I didn't mean to shit on your thread, but I've lost all respect for EA and their products.
Just think for a moment how long Desert Combat ran...and that was just the most popular (of many!) mods.  BF1942 was buried by mods.

BF2 was cool for a while, and I enjoyed the coordinated teamplay aspect immensely.  But think how long it took them to come out with a patch for the C4 throwing, the unbalanced airpower, the red-tag bug, etc.!  They were too busy working on the next big game, and relegated the fix work to Timmy the intern.  Hey, just buy another expansion pack for $40 with two maps and three weapons.

No worries, I have no dog in the fight. That being said, those pics are from a game titled Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. It's a different animal than BF2142.

Constantly Vote to Change the Map to "Strike at Karkand" - This is singlehandedly the greatest map in the history of anything. The game developers should've released Battlefield 2 with only this map, and named the game "Battlefield Karkand." There's absolutely no reason to play any other map, unless of course you have some brain disorder which prevents you from making well informed decisions. Strike at Karkand has everything; tanks, buildings, jeeps, trash dumpsters, and a train. A GODDAMN TRAIN!!! Plus there are plenty of rooftops for snipers to climb and perch on for countless hours, until mom gets home and starts complaining about the bathroom being on fire.

I freaking hate that map.
