According to a report in today’s Washington Post, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) could suffer budget cuts of almost 13 percent, which would effectively eliminate Project Gunrunner, a program designed to combat gun-trafficking from the U.S. to Mexico.

WOW!!
Notice that leaves them with 87% left?
Did arfcom do the budget cuts?

Should have cut it 87% and left them with the 13%.

Why would they reduce focus on illegals/gunrunning for Mexican Gangs?  Is that the best place to reduce efforts?

Well that explains why they just put a bunch of straw buyers on TV and claimed they took down a big smuggling ring. I bet the DEA wishes they could just arrest a bunch of street corner kids slinging crack and then claim they took out a bunch of drug runners too.

The same reason every time a town or city politician has to make budget cuts they cut the police and fire departments instead of the millions going to their buddies. It is to try and force us to give them all the money they want. It should be criminal.

Gee, I wonder if they are cutting "Operation Gunrunner" because they FUBAR'd the whole program?  Disband it immediately and cause chaos to cover their tracks?

The ATF has one of the worst cases of "mission creep" of any federal law enforcement agency.  They deserve the cuts to keep them in line.

On the one hand, I definitely support strangling the budget for this agency. However, this also affects NFA transfers. I'm currently at 3 months waiting for an SOT to SOT transfer to go through, and then the SOT can start the transfer process to me. The wait time will not decrease.

NFA is a money making operation. That won't get cut.

Why NOT focus on people illegally buying guns and selling them in Mexico?

Why NOT leave us law abiding citizens the fuck alone with our Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms?

Knowing the BATFE, I'm sure the 4 people or so processing Class III paperwork will now be reduced to a single person.  I don't know if I'd call that a win.  I sure as hell know that I don't want to wait two years for a new suppressor.

Well, you'd think the banners would be HAPPY that evil weapons are leaving the US!

Of course, we all know that is BULLSHIT.   Why the fuck would a cartel try to buy firearms in the US, when they are much cheaper from other countries?   Shit, in some places of the world, you can get full auto AKs for $30.   Why the FUCK would you try to come into the US and buy semi auto AKs for $400+?

Sweet. I would love to be able to see the day when the BATFE withers on the vine and then falls to the ground with no fanfare, there to rot and blow away.

Good riddance to a worthless hunk of big government that hasn't done anything of any measurable worth since its inception.

What scares me is what they might do if they really think their budget is in danger.  They will pull some stupid, over the top publicity stunt to try to justify their existence, and some poor schmuck (or multiple poor schmucks) will end up dying for it.  It's happened before.

Given how the .gov does things, how much was the planned budget increase that got cut back?

EG, increase budget by 8%, then reduce that to a 7% increase.  That makes it a 13% CUT in the increase, which is then called a 13% budget cut.

Most of the guns that end up in the drug trade come from the Mexican Police and Military.  They are very active partners in the drug trade.  People act like the Mexican government is actually trying to stop it.  They are funded by it.
