I've been testing with several Police agencies for the past year and I got a call today to schedule an oral board for later this month, but I'm hung on the most appropriate way to dress. I have been in the military since 2002, so it's been a long time since I interviewed for a LE agency and I don't want to blow my chance by showing up looking unprofessional.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

First post.

I didn't know a thing about wearing a suit to an interview since my wardrobe choice for the last 6 years was ABU's or Blue's. I just went to a Men's Warehouse and they walked me through the type of suit to get, the shoes to wear, down to the colors I should have on. I scored very well, so something worked.

Like they said, suit. Nothing less. Make sure you have enough resumes for the entire panel. Have a decent leather(ish) portfolio folder as well.

Good conservative suit.  I went with a navy blue suit, white shirt and maroon pattern tie, with black shoes and belt.  (Ex AF too, went from BDU's/Blues as well)

Suit, definately. First post wins it, as usual.

Be clean-shaven as well.  I know you said attire, but that is part of it.

Dress like you are going to inspection, you are.

Good Luck.

Not to turn this into a metrosexual styling forum, but in addition to a good haircut make sure your nails are trimmed and clean and shoes are clean and shined.

Remember this is your chance to present your self to the board.  How you speak, appear and act will be a large part of how they perceive you.
Best of luck

Good conservative suit; black, Navy or gray. I wouldn't stray from those colors. White shirt and low key tie...nothing too bright. As previously posted, haircut and good overall hygiene. Get good sleep the night before. Show up early. You don't want to be late or "on time" for this interview.

Thanks for the info. I'm not worried about grooming and polished shoes come naturally after this long in the service, but I havent worn a suit since I got married. I guess I'll have to go track one down

A good suit is a wise investment. The last interview i took part in blew my mind ,I had a nice suit and tie, fresh hair cut, clean shoes etc...  The interviewers actually remarked when I walked in the door at my appearance. The reason being, the people that interviewed before and after me I was the only one wearing a suit. The attire ran the list of clothing, shorts, t-shirts, jeans, polo's, flip flops,  dirty work cloths etc...   This was for a highly coveted job in a large metropolitan area.

like others have said, suit and tie.  I've never had a tailored suit, i just got a semi-decent one on sale from a department store and made sure it was dry cleaned, I was still one of the nicest dressed at the interview.  they're not expecting everybody to have amazing suits, they want to see the effort though.

Also, make sure you shake their hands and make eye contact with all of them when you walk in. Introduce yourself by name to each one them.
