Chicago in an effort to grow revenue is attempting to tax the internet.  They are really targeting places that are streaming movies and music and games, and call out those three in the new laws they are implementing, but they also say this

The amusement tax applies to charges paid for the privilege to witness, view or participate in an amusement. This includes not only charges paid for the privilege to witness, view or participate in amusements in person but also charges paid for the privilege to witness, view or participate in amusements that are delivered electronically.

Thus, it seems that anyone who pays membership fees and is from Chicago needs to have 9% of their membership dues sent over.

Get ready for a shit-ton more things like that.

Taxes are about to go way up there.  People are going to leave because of it.  Total tax receipts will go down.  Place will still be fucked.

If they want to fix this, they need to attract business, not run it out.

A lot of the big cities are going to have to do this, Chicago is just the first to step up to the plate.  Once the precedence is set expect it to expand.  Keep your powder dry, this is going to push people from the cities to the 'burbs and then the cities will have to push to tax the 'burbs.

an amusement tax?

You have to pay a tax to enjoy any form of entertainment?

That's almost as fucking stupid as the fucking "rain tax" maryland has

To fix the overburdened union pensions, tax more.  Yeah that will work, cause the assholes managed the money so well the first time around.

Dump the unions and pensions. 401k matching deposits for individuals as long as they work and their retirement money will be there without any further issues.

Of course. The dem party loses cash in that scenario, and the employees will retain it.

Fuck them, they need to stay north of the Aurora/Joliet line. We don't need them tards down here.

I know that a bunch of them white tards bought land near the Illinois River basin, near our range, they were upset that folks had guns and get this, used them. Was much insanity for the county explaining it ain't Shit-town.

Yeah, this is only going to get worse.

Places like Netflix need to have a splash page that keys to your ISP location warning people from Chicago they are being taxed $$$$ for viewing movies, and if they have a problem call the politician that put it in place.

Yep. Every time I hear local and state level tax increases, I argue they'll only bring tax revenue down. People with money and businesses will leave if the financial benefit is great enough. Along with better gun laws and weather, Tennessee found my $number, my annual house payments are lower than my MI income taxes were.

This story comes at the same time as the state legislature refused to bail out the Chicago public schools. A $600million contribution was due the teacher pension system last week. Money was not available, so the operating budget for next year was raided. 1,000 plus teachers got fired because there is now no money to pay them. Things are about to get nasty with the teachers union, and Rahm is desperate for cash.

They are literally too stupid to understand this.  For years we've watched a fair number of Illinois businesses relocate across the state line into Wisconsin each time Chicago or Illinois comes up with a new tax - especially since Wisconsin became a "Right To Work" state,

Actually not.  A 401k puts the risk on the person holding the 401k.  A pension system does not entail that risk, unless the employer does not make his contributions.  Which is what Chicago (and the State of Illinois) have been doing, not making pension payments.  And if the employer does not make the contributions to a pension system, how is it they all of a sudden will to a 401k?  Of course there are still plenty of social programs for the FSA being well funded in Chicago and Illinois.

All sorts of fuckheadetry to go around here.

The state constitution says you can't touch the pensions. Yes, downwards pension adjustments (not upward of course) are constitutionally protected here.

Chicago is just doomed.

Of course, the liberals will never learn from their utter disastrous mistakes, or those of other socialist havens (Greece), so it'll just keep getting worse all around the country. Chicago is just a warning of what's to come.

To liberals, their bright fucking ideas are supposed to affect everyone but them.

I used to work with a liberal guy who drove 50 miles each way to work. He was always going on and on about how we needed to get rid of cars and live like the Indians did.

Finally, I just said: " Hey Cochise , I don't see your fucking horse tied up out front, but I did see your truck in the parking lot".

*crickets*

Chicago can join Detroit. Together they might be able to figure out how to extract tax revenue from empty and abandoned neighborhoods.

The FCC controls the Internet which means now BHO does, like they would do that to his old hood.

While I agree this is a result of a socialist ideologically driven society to exploit any & all revenue sources. But at the same time it is really logical as it is a service that is being paid for & is being delivered to a resident of that area.

I remember when some states started mandating sales tax on Internet purchases that are brought into their state. People raised a fit but it is the way it is. So long as people vote in people willing to exploit this revenue source, it will be exploited.

& the final knowledge of Taxes is to give unto Cesar that which is Cesars'.

The truth is, properly written, a tax on renting movies even when those movies are delivered over the internet isn't necessarily bad (well, bad in the sense that you can't just keep on cranking up the tax rate when you are low on money...and bad because Netflix or whoever is just going to pass the cost on to the customer) what's bad is to do this they create a law that's so ridiculously broad

The issue now is funding pensions for retirees that are already retired, not future retirees.  Had a 401k been in place those employees would have their money today.  Instead the city has no money to pay them for decades to come.

And they would make the payments since the payment would be made while the employee was actively working.  The payments to the 401k stop when the employee retires.
