My dad was stationed aboard the USS Lake Champlain (CVS-39) in 1961 when Alan Sheppard piloted Freedom 7 as America's first man in space.

I was stationed on the Roosevelt (CVN-71) thirty years later...

He took some photos that I had never seen. They were made into slides and stuck in a closet years ago.

It is cool that he was a witness to history.
Anyhow... here ya go!

Pretty cool...

Thanks for sharing!  Ahh, the era when America's might shone peacefully throughout the world. Now our sword is unsheathed, striking and cleaving at our foes.  For the good ole days when we only worried about the commies.

Those Indian Orange flight suits were always cool.  Not at all tactical of course.  But they weren't designed for combat use.  They were designed to make it easier for rescue forces to spot a pilot who had to punch out over wilderness terrain.  Thanks for sharing some great historic pics.

Great pics!

Alan Shepard was a very brave guy... those old launch boosters had a failure rate only slightly better than 40%!

It takes quite a set to sit atop a few tons of explosive waiting for someone to touch it off, all the time crossing your fingers that the brains on the ground got it right.

Most of the time they got it right.

We should never forget the men and women who gave there lives reaching for the stars.

I hope to be in that position someday.
