I'm watching The History Channel's Extreme Marksman 2. They just refered to the 1867 Henry Rifle as an assault rifle. It was an advanced weapon in 1867 but putting it in the same category as the full auto military arms in use today is REALLY STUPID.

God, I pray none of our idiot lawmakers are watching too.

I can just see it now, "the Winchester 30-30 can shoot down the space shuttle 6 times and oh don't even get us started on the 1860 Henry, its sooo evil that it doesn't need the shoulder thing that goes up"

I really think some of the idiot gun laws are sparked by the dumb shit they say on the "Top Ten" shows and the like.

Ah, but this is the "improved" 1867 model with the iron frame. I'm sure some lawmaker will note that the heavier iron frame makes this gun even more dangerous than the brass frame model.

If not sparked by them, certainly used to convince the know-nothings that they should support the gun right infringements.

Watching as well.  To be fair, they did say it was the "first assault weapon of its' kind".  When considering that previous to the Henry, everything was a muzzle-loader and the Henry could fire 15 shots in rapid succession, it's not an unfair statement...Did you listen to the part about the battle of little big horn?

How would you define "assault rifle"?

For 1867 it was.

If I'm not mistaken, wasn't a lever gun once  turned into a machine gun by some famous gun maker?

Yeah but my concern is that some dipsh*t political type will see the show and discover a whole new category of weapon to target for elimination.

I consider the definition of an Assault Rifle to be a shoulder, or hand fired, weapon, utilizing a large capacity detachable magazine, using a mid to high powered military cartridge and capable of firing in multiple shot mode. (Full auto) I don't consider my AK clones, AR 15, or Mini 14 to be an Assault Rifle. They are Semi Automatic Sporting and Self Defense Rifles.

I would hardly put the Henry Rifle in that category.

assault weapon/rifle is a dumb term.  i refuse to call any gun assault weapon or rifle.

a firearm is a firearm

they lefties don't call cigarettes "assault cigarettes" depite the higher death rate per year than can be attributed to firearms.

Ted Kennedy already tried similar bullshit.

He mention that a new superpowered round like the 30-30Win. could easily penetrate police body armor, and that no background check or special license was required to purchase it.

One of the first things that an LEO learns is that his/her soft body armor will be defeated by almost any rifle cartridge and many stabbing weapons. Mr. Kennedy wouldn't know the difference between soft body armor and a dirty diaper.

I saw it too.  Personally I don't think the narrator was trying to put the Henry in the same league as an AR or AK, but to show that it was a rifle capable of firing mulitple times without having to reload, which for that time period was a giant leap in technology

Kinda makes sense and based on history, in 150 years anyone can have todays military version.

This is assuming the calendar keeps ticking past 2012 of course.

the original "assault rifle" was was developed by the Germans in 1944.   The definition was a rifle that could be fired off hand and easily carried by one soldier and fires full auto.  That was the definition until 1992.

So to use it on the Henry (I saw the show) was a stupid way to make a point of the rifles effectiveness.
