It's Sunday, the day before my Kelly week (a week "off" in our rotation). I work for an ambulance company in the city beer built that handles ALS & BLS calls with some critical care sprinkled in, ask me anything!*

*No patient specifics will be disclosed mostly bc I can't remember them all but also that who HIPAA thing.

Not the OP, bit when I was in EMS, A LOT. Those nursing home elderly don't drive themselves. Most of them didn't come back out either.

Thanks NotIssued. Seems like the OP is taking a nap!

If he's talking about Milwaukee as the town that beer built... I bet it's a lot...

I was snoozing and waiting for my squad (ambulance) to get back from a call.

I would say in the hight of flu season about 50% of our calls were BS flu like symptoms. The ones from nursing homes were usually pneumonia or a UTI.

And yes, you got the right city. Mogadishu

Sorry, I just threw up in my mouth a little about that. No. There's no chance in hell I would fuck anything or anyone in an ambulance. Why? In the last month I've had maybe 3-4 cases of C Diff transported and about 50% or more of our patients have MRSA. Not to mention a lot of them don't shower nearly as much as they should.

About every shift. They aren't too bad sometimes. Like one is more like the unofficial company mascot & I'll be sad when he dies. He's just a chronic alcoholic that doesn't have any other problems. There are a lot of others I don't like but on the plus side, our report writing software can look up frequent flyers and I just have to confirm the info. Saves time with the report.

How much of a quality difference is there between different types of ambulances/services in your area?

I've heard others say stuff like, "some are almost fully stocked ER rooms, ready for anything, while others are little more than body delivery trucks with a siren."

I'm pretty sure he knew that. You do realize an ambulance is not the cleanest place to be doing that sort of thing right?

In our system, the medic isn't the ambulance driver, they're the ambulance driver's assistant.

Between us and the competition, our supplies are about the same (or so I hear bc this is the only company I have worked for here). Our equipment & squads are much newer and in better shape. Inside the company (ALS vs BLS) big difference. As a paramedic running ALS, at carry the same medications an ER would use in cardiac arrest, pain management, and other assorted medications. Our BLS squads carry very minimal medications as they aren't licensed to carry much at all. They do serve as taxis to the ER (sadly). They also do discharges to nursing homes and dialysis appointments.

So what determines the type of ambulance that arrives - is it just luck or do you prioritize based on what the incident is as-reported, or both or what?

Yeah, we run dual medic at my FT job (where I am now) my PT/volunteer job will he single medic soon. Truth be told, it scares me a little to be THE guy in charge on scene. Oh well, time to put on my big boy pants and do work.

Most WTF (so far) would have been from the county jail. Big dude with psych and medical problems needed to be taken to the hospital bc he was septic (so says the Dr). Entry team went in twice to give him Ativan (8 mg total) and he was still feisty. They put him in restraints and 4 deputies came with. My briefing for them was 'Do what you gotta do if he fights, I will deal with the results.' He stopped struggling half way there & I thought he died. Nope, just sleeping finally. We spent about 2 hrs on scene just waiting for the jail to get him loaded.

Not too bad, I know but it was the first entertainment I really got here.

ETA: Never got stuck... Yet.

None. Most of our patients are on Medicaid or Medicare. I actually like the ones on their own insurance bc at least they are going to pay for the ride instead of me paying for it. Also, I don't steal bc I like my job (mostly).
