have you ever started a fire just to see the pretty lights?

Nothing. The DC storms knocked out the primary and secondary phone comm lines to my fire panel in the building I manage. This means if there is a fire, the monitoring company won't get the signal from the panel and (in the voice of Quint from Jaws), "no distress signal will be sent".

I was going to ask if there was a fire, but this pretty much covers it.

No, but have accidently tripped the alarm and emptied a 12 story office building on a few occasions. I usually wait by the front door for the fire dept and explain the situation, get permission to silence the alarm and let the tenants return to their offices.

You're aware that it's customary to buy the rest of the crew beer when you do that on a ship?

Are you comfortable with the fact that you can be replaced with a $20 smoke detector and a 9volt battery?

Are you comfortable in the fact that you have no idea what youre talking about? Is the smoke detector gonna call the fire dept at 2 in the morning at an unoccupied office building?

No I'm gonna use the land line in my office. The lines that are down are the primary and secondary that the alarm panel uses to send the alarm signal to to the monitoring company. In this case the alarm will sound, but the monitoring company (kinda like ADT) wont know it and therefore not dispatch the fire dept. Thats why I have to be here.
ETA- I'm pretty sure I made this distinction in the 3rd post from the top.

It depends if it is on a treadmill with beans. I can pull it farther if no beans, but not as far as if it had a 9mm instead of a 45ACP. If it had a Glock we would already be dead and thus no need to pull fire watch.

Seems like it would be easier to just hook the alarm system into a different phone line temporarily...

Chances are the security/fire/etc lines are copper hard lines, while the rest of the building is running some type of PBX system.

You would think so but it doesnt work that way. The monitoring company knows the building address and nature of the call based on the phone number they have programmed. If I switched lines they would receive notification, but have no idea what or where it was coming from. All sorts of confusion would ensue.
Anyway, the lines came back up around 2am and I was able to [/firewatch]
