Wife's FWD car has started making "clunk-clunk-clunk" noises in the front-end during left hand turns. I'm taking it ot the shop next week. What could be wrong? Car does have 150k+ miles.

Suggestions? I don't want to go and get over sold and be told that it needs things that it doesn't.

Main bearing or is that the same thing as a CV joint? My Pathfinder was making the same noise, but would go away, then come back.

Depending on when and how it can be any of the above plus the strut bearing (chunk of rubber) where the strut mount / pivots in. CV's usually start clicking and you'll find that they usually go bad after they've torn the boot and spun all the grease out.

CV, very easy to check which boot is torn and the joint contaminated. BTWt he front's going to fall off sooner or later.

Autozone sells them from 49-180 depending on type of car. On hondas I charged 50 a side.

Entirely depends on the vehicle.

Bought a fully assembled CV replacement recently for my son's 96 Honda civic for less than $100 from an auto parts store, spent another $100 to have someone at a shop put it in.

I'd expect anywhere from $250 - $800, depending on what vehicle it is and how much fucking about it will take to get it out and a new one put in, but that's a seriously full-on guesstimate.

I'll go with CV joiint , but at that mileage if ball joints, struts, anti roll bar bushings, and wheel bearings haven't been replaced I would at least have them checked. All these are wear items that can affect vehicle safety.

You've probably heard this by now...

CV joint.

Odds are that the CV joint boot got torn some time ago, allowing dirt to get into the joint, which wore it out.

This is pretty common. You wouldn't know the boot was torn if you didn't inspect for it.

I've had two things causing clicks when I put the wheel all the way to one side:
A branch stuck in the undercarriage
A CV joint on it's way out

I just dealt with this on a Civic. It was a major pain in my ass because it was new to me and I've never done anything like that before. I had to learn as I went. Ended up paying my cousin's boyfriend to help with a couple of steps I couldn't do on my own and also as an extra pair of hands. If I had to do it again I could do it in an hour or two, especially with the right tools. Most of which you can rent or borrow at O'Reilly or Auto Zone.

It was about $100 for the parts, and $35 of that was for the ball joint I fucked up getting the front end apart (very common mistake, I learned afterwards). The actual removal and replacement of the CV axle was a minute or less.

Fixing it yourself might cost $75-200. Someone else up to $500 unless they notice it needs somthing elseor cause it to. Last car i looked at that had been to a shop i found a set of needle noses and bolts missing. Sucks they are chinese but they aren't getting them back and i don't think they will touch that car again.
