What get's me is people that DROWN their salads in dressing... What's the point of eating like a rabbit if you've got 400-500 calories in dressing on the damn thing?

EPOCH

congrats on the weight loss bro, I lost 40 pounds my senior year in college thru eating sensible, excercise, and not drinking a case of beer every weekend

believe it or not, i weighed 210 at 5'8" my sophomore year of HS

i concluded that if i wanted any ass whatsoever, being staring offensive and defensive tackle on the football team was not going to do it

i proceeded to lose 60lbs through............and call me a liar if you must..............eating cheese and jalapeno nachos for lunch, working all day and drinking beer for supper

i still maintain 170lbs at 6'

No shit. He said he was 6 feet tall...a 34 inch waist is about right. And at 6 feet tall and 192...unless you're a string bean, that's not heavy at all.

I believe you...I weighed 205 at 5'18" when I was 15...and I ALSO played center/nose tackle on the football team!
Then I stopped drinking soda, started exercising seriously and by the time I was 22, I weighed 170lbs...

I lost the first 25 easy...I was down to 185lbs by the time I was 17. But that last ten was HARD. I was in ROTC in college, running about 35-40 miles a week on average, working out every day at least twice and watching what I ate. I have a pretty wide frame, and I was down to probably 7-8% body fat at the time.
Link Posted: 8/9/2005 6:40:56 PM EDT
yep been eating smaller meals and small snacks instead of 3 large meals. Combined with weight lifting and bike riding I have seen significant changes in my appearance. Having a nice looking GF helps to want to improve my self image too.
Link Posted: 8/9/2005 6:41:15 PM EDT
I know EXACTLY what you're staying.

I've lost about 60 pounds over about 6 or 7 months and I've managed to keep it off for the past 2 or so with little effort.

How? By cutting out the junk food and reducing portions. Killing the fat and sugar helped enormously.

In my journey I've noticed that it's damn near impossible to eat healthy without making a solid effort to do so. American culture based around fast foods and HUGE FUCKING PORTIONS is just astonishing once you've stepped outside of it and look in.

I get by on just a FRACTION of the food that I used to consume and when I do have a "cheat day" my eyes are usually way bigger than my stomach is.

I'm currently hovering around 235 (I'm 6'4") I'd like to go down to 220 but it's not a huge priority for me at the moment. However, I *USED* to think I was a Goddamned whale until I started REALLY looking at people around me. I'm actually THIN compared to a LOT of them.

I also blame retailers and clothing makers for this insanity. I'm 48. When I was in my teens (my weight problem started in Jr.High) and beyond I had a hell of time finding clothes. It was Sears for "old men" shit or the Big & Tall place.

Today I go into Target or China Mart and there are shelves full of XXXL and XXXXL crap! And to add insult to injury the stuff marked XL today was actually XXL a few years ago. People can say "Oh I can still wear the same sizes I did before". BULLSHIT! It's a trick to make you feel good.

Hey, but why worry about what you look and feel like? Everyone will have those scooters provided for "free" by some government program, just need your doctor to sign off on the fact that you have "mobility problems".

it took me one summer to lose 60......................BUT, lowest i ever got was 150 and i have not ever been able to get back down that low, despite many efforts. apparently i'm staying at 170 unless i plan to actually work out........................which would really cut into my beer drinking time

Sounds about right.

I'm 6'1 and about 180-185 and I have a 33-34" waist and I'm *definitely* not overweight or even close.
Link Posted: 8/9/2005 7:18:22 PM EDT
cm,

I'm about your height and weight... I'm 6'1" and about 195 right now. I got up to about 205, but it's pretty distributed. Since I switched to nights, I've been eating less, and dropped to about 192 recently, but then did a few days, and the eating more brought me up to 199. I generally fluctuate closer to 197. I'd like to get back down to about 185.

I look at my work badge, and I can definitely tell I was a bit more slender. My face looks skinnier. I was probably about 180 when I started working here, and I think I was starting to feel squeezed in a 32" waist. Now I'm to a 34", and I don't think my waist is big. I don't feel large because of it. Thankfully I have decent size/shape legs and butt. If I could flatten out my tummy and lose the 'handles, I'd be pretty happy.

I doubt you're far off of where I am, and I don't feel bad about myself.

Some people prefer the taste of Diet Coke over regular Coke.

When I was in college I worked very hard to gain weight. I played basket ball and the continuious work out would cause me to loose weight. I turned 30 and that changed everything. My son is just now starting to gain a little weight. Last year he was 6'2 - 125 and he is now 6'5" 160.

Hm, I didn't know caffeine caused one to gain weight? I'd much rather cut out caffeine (2-3 cups of coffee a day) than beer.

<-- 33yo, 155lbs, 5'7", 30" waist, 40" chest, body fat is around 22% (would like to get it back down to 16% or so, where I was about a year ago).

5'11" - 190 lbs. 34" waist.

I could stand to lose 15 lbs.

Link Posted: 8/10/2005 6:03:08 AM EDT
Gah...I don't do the "weight" thing overly much: I train and muscle weighs more than fat.
I am 5'6" and am toned...I wear a 4/6 and have approx 14% body fat. Not bad for a chick in her late 30s.
I eat what I want (pretty much) but I work out regularly...
Link Posted: 8/10/2005 6:09:10 AM EDT
Body types are different.

I saw an Iron man athlete, for instance, who looked like your typical beer guzzling slob. Except his resting heart rate was in the 40s and he had endurance like you can't believe. But he was still fat.

Similarly, I have seen people who eat like rabbits and excercize, but are still fat.

I have seen people who only eat one meal a day, and that meal is usually a salad and good fish like sammon, and they are still fat.

The blubberinos who don't exercise and who eat constantly exist, but not everyone carrying extra weight is like them.

Sounds about like me. (38 inch waist, but I also have a thick torso, thicker than most)

Sometimes WHEN you eat is more important than WHAT you eat.

My shoulders and chest are wider than my waist, a testament to how strong you can get pulling bows back and lifting lots of crap.

Interesting point JW

As some of you know, I photograph triathlons for a living. (In fact, I'll be shooting the National Championship this weekend in KC with another board member)

I am endlessly amazed by the variety of body types that manage to finish triathlons. People have an image of "triathlete" in their mind based upon Gatorade commercials or may Ironman Hawaii broadcasts on TV. What they don't show is the "average" finisher.

That gets me too... there'll be a piece of lettuce floating in the ranch dressing "Great salad!"

Same goes for pancakes. I use REAL maple syrup, but even that I use in moderation. I constantly see people literally try to drown a pancake in the "fake" maple syrup- you know the stuff made out of corn syrup and artificial butter flavoring. GROSS. And they wonder why they can't lose weight. Or people who add 2 heaping spoonfuls of refined white sugar to their coffee.

It's the "little" things that all add up. (Well unless you're ordering huge Mexican dishes with extra side dishes... LOL, then you've got no hope)

Link Posted: 8/10/2005 7:24:19 AM EDT
to each their own. I rember being a 28 arround 15, was a 32 by 20. Made it up to 38 by 34, back to 32 by 35, right now about 33. At 32 the significant other was complaining about me being too skinny - she was with me at the 28, but somehow an 18 year old girl and a 34 year old mother have different tastes.
Link Posted: 8/10/2005 7:28:39 AM EDT
Realistic... sure. I'm realizing that losing 15 more lbs. isn't the easiest thing for me to do. I have to restrict my intake as well as ride the exercise bike for 1/2 hour (in addition to my normal work out). Unfortunately with the way I feel and my work/home renovation schedule this isn't realistic...

I'd like to get down to 220 lbs. which would make me look trim. I'm 235 (waist size 36) and I doubt most people would say I'm a fatty.
