WHEN John Travolta and Nicolas Cage swapped faces in the movie thriller Face/Off, it was dismissed as science fiction.

Now two leading plastic surgeons have drawn up plans for the world's first face transplant.

They have outlined in the medical journal The Lancet how they would transplant a complete face from a dead body.

Experts say the operation is technically feasible and would be ethically justified by the dreadful disfigurement and reclusive existence of some victims of burns, facial cancers and accidents.

Peter Butler, of London's Royal Free Hospital, and Shehan Hettiaratchy, of Harvard Medical School's Transplantation Biology Research Centre, admit the idea would be shocking to many.

Incisions would be made around the back of the head and the scalp of the dead donor, and the face would be effectively "de-gloved" off the skeleton.

Mr Butler said blood supply and nerve reconnection could be achieved.

But experts disagree on how much the recipient would look like the donor.

Because only a thin layer of tissue would be transferred, the transplanted face would mould itself at least partially to the features of the recipient.

But they might take on some of the characteristics of the dead person.
