Archived [ARCHIVED THREAD] - Are there any public offroading areas near Myrtle Beach, SC?

Next month I'll be heading to the tourist trap known as Myrtle Beach.  If a friend of mine takes his family, we'll probably end up trying to go wheeling somewhere.  Does anyone know of a public area close by you can go play with 4x4's and not get arrested or need highly modified vehicles?  I've heard of people running trails around the base on Hwy 17, but I figured that was probably private or .gov owned and may cause some trouble.  Any advice would be appreciated!
