Sure, they're a knife, but can they do anything that other blade styles can't do either as well or better?

I've got a folding one I picked up on sale that was recommended here. I like that you have two straight edges to sharpen on it, makes things really easy if you're using stones.
Link Posted: 2/15/2017 10:34:58 PM EDT
[#2]
The edge at the tip can be used as a scraper.
Link Posted: 2/15/2017 10:35:03 PM EDT

Typically a Tanto Tip doesn't break as easy as say a drop point. Thus why I carry a tanto tip after breaking the tips off of drop type tip knives.
Link Posted: 2/15/2017 10:36:05 PM EDT
[#4]
Sure, piercing medieval bamboo armor.

I had an idea for a small fixed blade where the tanto tip was chisel ground to use as a scraper/prybar.  That might be kinda cool.

[#5]
I have never thought them to be practical.

Tantos were designed so you could stab more aggressively into tough materials without worrying about the tip snapping off. Thats about it.

Short summary on Knife Depot.

Stab through car doors or oil drums without breaking the point?

I have a Cold Steel Recon Tanto from the mid 90s and it's a pretty beefy knife.

I also have a signed Pat Crawford titanium Combat Tanto that I wouldn't punch through doors with.

They seem to work slightly better as cold chisel than more traditionally styled knives.

I've had a couple of folders and they seemed to be good all around knives.

They make some people really angry for some reason though.

I use tanto knives exclusively in my garden. I have to pierce and torque-cut some really tough plants, and I don't think my thinner drop-points would survive.

I typically round off that corner of the blade.  To make it look like a Hinderer profile.  It keeps the heavy tip, while giving a more useful belly.

Its a lot harder to break the tip off, unless its an Emerson, then its pretty easy to break the tip off

Stronger tip for piercing stuff. Why do we still use it even though we don't need to pierce armor? Because capitalism and it looks cool. I've got a cold steel tanto dagger in my work backpack. The fuck am I going to do with that? Cut a badguy after I shoot him? I have it because why not, that's why.

Easy to sharpen due to streight edges.

The point is reinforced for better stabbing through things like body armor.

My 20 year old Cold Steel Master Tanto is hard to beat for a small, concealable fighter.  RAZOR sharp, very thick, almost indestructible and has skull crusher tang.  I wouldn't carry any other small fighter. Hides in a boot all day.

He is talking about a Tantou . This is the correct name for a short dagger. We have adopted the tip style found on most Nihontou and call anything with that tip a "tanto". Really, tantou can have any shape with or without a distinct yokote (line defining the tip and the rest of the sword). It just means small sword in Japanese.

ETA: I work retail, and all our hard goods come in boxed. It wasn't an exaggeration, I really do cut through that many each week. I posted a pic in Star Screams EDC knife thread of a stack of boxes from one truck once, and that was a small delivery.

I have limited diving experience, but I recall that my dive instructor recommended that kind of blade for diving so you could pry on things and the tip wouldn't break, e.g. oysters.

Try sharpening it. I use a tanto to open boxes by using the second point, not the main tip. It cuts well thru box tape without over penetrating. You want to use more than just the tip.

I like crkt knives. Overall good value and take a good edge but dull very quick. My spyderco has the same blade steel as a bunch of crkt 8crmov13 or whatever (i think I am missing a letter in there) but the spydie holds an edge way better. May be all in my head.
