Do you split your mortgage payment with your wife/husband? Or could you afford your house on your single income alone?
Link Posted: 6/14/2009 9:27:14 AM EST
me, myself, and I
Link Posted: 6/14/2009 9:28:42 AM EST
Just me. House, cars and all the bills. Shopping and school stuff is on her.

Split it down the middle, even though I bring home 3x the pay she does.

Split.

ETA - I could afford it alone, but wouldn't want to.

I pay for it by myself off of my lowly E-6 pay. I'm the sole breadwinner in this family.
Link Posted: 6/14/2009 9:33:40 AM EST
My wife pays for it by herself. I stay home with the kids.
Link Posted: 6/14/2009 9:36:10 AM EST
i pay for everything- wife (to be in 2 weeks) is in school- pharmacy school.
Link Posted: 6/14/2009 9:39:33 AM EST

Single income until the wife finishes up her degree. After that, it will still be me paying the mortgage, but she will be pumping up the savings account.

When my wife and I purchased our house, we budgeted for the possibility of only having one income. That came in handy when I got laid off a few years ago. It came in handy more recently when we had kids and decided she should stay home with them.

I could pay the bills with just my income, she could almost do the same with hers. That said, it all goes into the same bank account, we don't split things up or keep track of who spends what.

+1

Either of us could pay the necessary bills with our income. We pay what needs to be, buy what needs to be, and go on with life.

Just me. My wife is a stay at home mom.

Me. And my wife is an attorney.
Link Posted: 6/14/2009 9:48:42 AM EST
All money goes into one account. I do the budget and pay the bills from it. So we both pay the bills, there's no her/my bills. Just bills.
She asks before she spends any money.
I make 3X what she does.

Just me and my two guard cats here.
Link Posted: 6/14/2009 9:53:12 AM EST
The wife and I treat all income as joint and have a monthly allowance. She makes a little more than me. I could pay the mortgage on my own paycheck but would likely be eating out of a dumpster.
Link Posted: 6/14/2009 9:56:23 AM EST
i could pay all the bills but it would be (and truthfully still is) kinda tight around here.

GF gives me her half of the bills every month. we make about the same $

Any tips on this? How did you manage to be a stay at home dad?
Link Posted: 6/14/2009 10:48:08 AM EST
single income.... no wife.
Link Posted: 6/14/2009 10:50:55 AM EST
My wife and I split it all. We could manage on one income but it would be a wee bit tight.

I pay it all. My wife is a full-time mother, which doesn't really bring in any income...

I bought the house and make the payments.
Her income goes to support some of her expenses.
About 80% of the family income comes out of my paycheck.

Condo is paid for. Our only bills are wife's car, cable/internet, electricity, and wife's student loans. She's a stay-at-home mom taking college courses online(6 last semester), and no income.

I don't mind it a bit.

Assuming the offer we just put in today is accepted and our financing goes through (it should we're pre-approved for $20k more than our offer) then we'll be using both paychecks. I could swing things on one but we'd then have to start watching the day bills are due instead of paying bills the day they arrive.
Link Posted: 6/14/2009 11:27:48 AM EST
All me at this point. When the wife was working, it all went into the account and the bills got paid, etc..

It is much tighter on just one income, but that's the choice we made when we decided to become parents.

Between my truck and the farm, I could pay both payments and have enough to buy beans and rice. Throw in insurance, taxes, and the like, and I couldn't do it without dumping the truck, or selling the farm.

Just me... I am single and yet to figure out how my two boxers can pay their part....

We could make it on my income. My wife likes to work and she likes to take 2 or 3 vacations a year. It's a good thing she likes to work.

What is the "Mortgage" thing that you speak of?

We wanted kids, that means that my wife became a stay at home mom and I was the sole wage-earner - been that way for 26 years.

While my house is paid for, whatever she and I have belongs to us. We communicate on what we want to buy and how we are going to pay the bills. If I wanted to have seperate accounts and a division of expenses, I'd have skipped getting married and just settled for going it alone.

I really don't get relationships where each party divvies up the expenses. Why bother getting married if 2 are not going to become 1?

Both of our paychecks get electronically deposited into one account.

Bills get paid from that account, without any thought at all as to where the money came from.

It is our money.
