the tv show was pretty "meh"

the movie starring kristi swanson on the other hand was very good

Not sure what you mean, but IIRC Whedon shot the show for the 4x3 format.
Some overseas DVD releases were released in 16x9, but Joss had nothing to do with it.

I distinctly remember seeing a crew member on the outside of the frame in this episode the first time I saw it years ago. I didn't notice it on Netflix, though...
