Do I need to be tripping to know what the hell is going on? The damn movie just dragged and dragged and dragged, seemed like it took 6 hours to watch. Hell even Martin Sheen looked more bored than me. Am I missing something or is it just another mediocre movie?

If the guy does not get it he probably never will.
He grew up in the wrong generation. |

The redux version sucked. Miss Playboy centerfold fucking the boat crew, Martin Sheen's side trip to some rubber plantation where the host sitting at the table erupts into some cheesy, volatile, hot tempered European in an Italian movie, the tryst with the plantation bell pretty much overloaded my WTF capacitors and I turned it off.
It became a boring movie in an otherwise good movie. Sheen should never gotten off the boat. |

OP have you seen the original? It's anything but "mediocre." Redux is a "director's cut" of the original, but after watching it, it was clear to me why the cuts were made in the first place. The 1979 original is the superior film.
ETA: that being said, if you haven't seen the original, you may now be underwhelmed when you do, having already sat through Redux. |

Redux feels like a complete telling of the story.
The original is a studio cut approved for all audiences. |

I loved it. Especially the directors cut. True, it didn't flow as well as the original but when I like something, more is better.

I bet OP owns a selfie stick and gets hours of entertainment from it.

Its not a Vietnam war movie, it's a movie about insanity that just happens to be set in Vietnam

I thought the second half of the original movie sucked, the redux took the suckage to a higher level. I watched the original when it came out and thought the second half sucked then, I thought maybe it would have grown on me in the years since so I watched it again a year or so ago. Nope, still sucked after so far in the movie. I had also gotten redux at the same time and watched it right after. Sucked worse.

Redux is the best version. I especially like the French Plantation scene. |
|
Definitely no Red Dawn. Maybe that's where my expectations were and why I was so let down. I did like where they took the beach just to surf

It's obvious why the extra scenes in Redux were deleted from the original release. Makes the movie campy.

It's probably best to watch the original release first, the deleted scenes do derail the plot a bit. I'm still glad they released redux.
The discussion with the Frenchman at the dinner table was strong, and Kurtz reading to Willard the newspaper articles, "tell me soldier, how to things smell to you", was brilliant as well. |

Those who don't get the plantation scene appear to know nothing about the French involvement in Indochina.
The message in that section was "France abandoned her soldiers who fought here against the communists. America will do the same." And we did. Both versions are excellent, but tell very different stories. And go read "Heart of Darkness" and write an 11 page analysis of why that story iscawesome. |
