Here is some info that was posted on a another site...

The letter is real. It was written by Gordon to his wife in the event of his death. His belongings were shipped back to her and she found it in the pocket of one of his shirts. We had Nikolaj Waldau (Gordon) read it just in case we could find a place for it, and he did such a heartfelt reading that it had to get into the movie.

I wondered about that, and remembered the scene where the one Ranger was trying to get the Ranger with the broken hand to hold a "death letter" for him.

Very moving.

There was further info on the matter posted, the guy who told about this was a sound guy at the set.
