I mean, imagine if they were spinning it that the earth were going to get colder? Food crops dying, water freezing, need even MORE fuel and so on. I think people would really panic about that. Not the kind of thing that simply recycling and buying a prius would really make a statement about.... But, who wants to be COLD? Global Warming has a kind of Corona/Bacardi/Cozumel festival feel about it. Warmer would be great in most places and where not, I mean how hot could it get? There are always trade winds. NY and LA under water? Whats not to like? More northern land to grow food crops? Sounds good to me. Less winter fuel costs? Works for me. Winter Olympics cancelled? Yawn. Put the figure skater chicks on rollerblades and I'm good to go. So what's the big deal? Warm weather is good weather unless I'm mistaken or really a fan of ice fishing.

(And for the scientists, I know about CO2 sequestration in cold ocean currents, CO2 and it's potential for ocean acidification and the effect on plankton calcium formation and the like. Kind of poking fun but kind of serious too since we don't really know how the earth will turn out. And YES I know my rant is better without this disclaimer...)

The prescription to cure cooling will be exactly the same as warming.

The earth will continue to warm and cool in sequences with or without us...just as surely as the liberals will tax us.

But do you know about the work of the late Dr.John Martin?

You see, he died too early to discover why his hypothesis of iron seeding was incorrect in that the iron was not persistent. That came later...although with Dr. Martin gone, no one wants to further the work. What happens to the iron, contrary to Dr. Martin's hypothesis, is it sinks. Yes, it rapidly sinks...under animal power in a process called vertical migration.

Vertical migration is the process of zooplankton responding to light, hiding in the depths during the day to avoid predation and rising at night to feed on phytoplankton...the same phytoplankton that were seeded by adding iron sulfate to the upper layers of the oceans.

Because phytoplankton and cyanobacteria are responsible for over 85% of all the oxygen we breathe, it stands to reason that phytoplankton are the missing carbon link. What is missing carbon? It is a mass of over half the annual anthropogenic carbon that ends up MISSING each year in the atmosphere. Yes, it is significant.

You see, Dr. Martin didn't comprehend the magnitude of vertical migration. Or the implication that it would remove the iron from the surface. And phytoplankton cannot exist except at the surface because its energy source is the sun.

Now what happens to the zooplankton when they are in the deep? They respire, digesting that zooplankton AND they secrete chitin, a material that until a few years ago, was ALSO considered "missing", just like the carbon. And yes, in the same magnitude of the missing carbon. Well, the mystery was just discovered and the chitin is no longer missing.

What happens is an anaerobic bacteria has not only a powerful enzyme but also acts as a chitin-locating colony. A bacteria that is motile is not unknown...but a colonizing bacteria that can move as a colony is something rather strange...as it can LOCATE CHITIN. Being an anaerobe, these bacteria secrete methane and at the cold temps and high pressures, forms a mineral known as a methane clathrate. This is a type of methane-water "ice"...well, it is an ice but it doesn't float. Or melt until the pressure is reduced.

Now how about iron? Well, when we had a lot of sulfates in the air from vulcanism, all the dust from the Gobi and other high deserts high in iron would combine with the sulfates, making them bioavailable. Sulfates from coal and petroleum are just as effective.

So there is a natural cycle!

Ahh man...it's global climate CHANGE.

Didn't you get the memo on the buzz word switch?

I'll have to keep that bit about Dr. Martin in mind. Sounds fascinating, thanks Keith.

Here, let me state where missing carbon comes from:

Phytoplankton take in CO2 and make carbohydrates.
Zooplankton eat phytos..then swim to the depths.
Zooplankton shed chitin
Chitin eaten by bacteria
Bacteria make methane
Methane in the deep form clathrates

So, anything that increases the iron sulfate/phosphate in the oceans spurs the sequestering of carbon.

Iron is natural, only iron oxide isn't useable by phytos...so sulfate emissions are beneficial here.

Dr. John Martin smiles on me from Heaven..

because heating can be blamed on us.

what are they gonna say about cooling "all this fossil fuel we're burning is causing the earth to cool!!!!!!"

although that is only slightly more ridiculous that what they're trying to pass off now.

don your tinfoil hat for a moment and think of this.-
small differentials in temp cost alot more on the high side than they do on the low. when the global warming craze started, it cost A LOT more to cool a house than to heat it. so, which would scare people more- "yawn, it was 2 degrees colder than usual last month, so my heating bill has gone up $2." or "ZMGWTFBBQ, it was 2 degrees warmer than usual last month and the AC bill has has gone up $50!!!!!!!!"

ETA: besides, they're done with that anyway. remember, global warming is the cause of any record cold temps, anywhere.

If humans were around when the ice age happened it would be our fault and when they melted it would have been us again. The earth has cycles we need to stop flattering ourselves.
Link Posted: 6/4/2008 4:39:06 AM EST

It is estimated that only one eighth of the surface of the Earth is suitable for humans to live onthree-quarters is covered by oceans, and half of the land area is either desert (14%), high mountains (27%),[106] or other less suitable terrain.

Land use Percentage
Arable land: 13.13%
Permanent crops: 4.71%
Permanent pastures: 26%
Forests and woodland: 32%
Urban areas: 1.5%
Other: 30%

Do you really believe that 7 billion people occupying 1/8 of the planets surface can effect global change? If we shit freon, pissed CO2 and burned tires for fuel, we couldn't make a dent compared to what mother nature is capable of. We've been an industrialized civilization for scarcely 200 years. Not even a bugs fart compared to planetary time. All these global change scientists ignore geology, geology tells the story of the past, all you have to do is take a core sample and you can see that livable & arable time in the earths history is recent, small in scale compared to past history and narrow compared to past geological changes. Global warming & cooling is is to be expected, even catastrophic change is to be expected. Scientists are trying to micro manage mother nature and it can't be done.

How do we determine what temperature the earth should be at?

What is the 'correct' temperature?

The poles are cold, the deserts are hot.

Global Warming!!!!!

THe huggers can kiss my ass!

1st week in June and I had to turn the central heating furnace back on last night it was so fucking cold and wet.

It's not Global Warming anymore.

Serious. My sister is a Greenpeace, PETA nut. By changing the name they cover their asses for the years it gets cold.

It is as plain as the nose on your face that GW alarmism is a bunch of bunk. Unfortunately we are still a few years away from victory.

The movement has jumped the shark, give it time, and keep fighting.
