Well ive been playing 7s from the start pretty much. Love them, and i will never buy a 6 ever again. Recently have gotten an 8 string and its pretty much all i want is 8s now. Most people say they will never even use a 7 or find a use for one but there is definitely a market for everyone. Theres a community for 7 and 8 string players over at www.sevenstring.org which is pretty active. But anyway here are 2 of my recents.

Do they make string sets for those or do you have to fake it?

They make tons of sets for 7sbut none for 8s. For those you just buy a 7 set and then a single string in whatever guage you want. Usually in the .066-.070 range but some like to go .070-.080 which i think is too much. Depends on the scale length of the guitar really

How is an eight string tuned? I know a seven has a low B.

No, but I play a 5-string bass and am considering getting a 6-string before I buy a 4-string (probably won't, though, everybody needs a dedicated 4-string...)
When playing a 7-string or an 8-string do you generally change your chords or just leave out the lower ones? Do you, or do you know anybody who does, use higher strings instead of lower, so it's EADGBEAD or something? Do you know anybody who plays 7- or 8-stringers for anything but metal? Ever seen 9+ string guitars (counting courses of strings as single strings to leave out standard 12-stringers and the like)? I like the idea of the 11- and 12-string basses like Jean Baudin plays, but they seem a little impractical to me |

yea man I got an RG7321 I know the 7t his tuned to B but on the eight, is the eight tuned to G? |

I had an Ibanez 7620 w/an EMG707 and loved it. I think I bought it in 1999or 2000 and sold it last year.
Wish I could have kept it, but I don't have enough $ to justify it. I bought a ESP Viper to replace it. I used 09-.50 guage strings on it. I think it had a lot more punch like the lighter strings. Sounded just like Fear Factory thru a Mesa Dual Rectifier. |

Chords are the same, but you can add to them if you please. And there is alot of people who play an 8 with a High A instead of a Low F#. Idk anyone famous but there are some who like to play jazzy type stuff with it. As far as non metal goes, there are a alot of classical 8 string players but most of them are acoustic. With electric ive seen a few people play some clean funk style stuff. But the biggest reason people buy tyhe ibanez, sadly, is because they wanna play their favorite Meshuggah riffs haha. Thats wasnt my intention at all. I just love the lower range. There are also people who make their own custom 9-10 string guitars with just straight up single strings with guages up to .090, which is think it just too much. And the 11-12 string basses are cool but those are played more with a tap style, i doubt anyones hand can fit around one of those haha. |

Nah the standard 8 string tuning is F# which is a half step lower than G. Ive tuned mine to G a few times with the 7th string being B#. Sounds pretty cool but defeats the purpose to me idk. |

I had a 7 string for awhile, my fingers are on the stubby side, so I got rid of it. I think if somebody has the fingers for it & makes good use of the extra string(s), then go for it!

I've got a Dean 7 string. I'm not sure how much it was new but it was pretty cheap used.

yeah You see I've never played one, but it seems to me the 8+ string guitars are more used to strike fear into people, I mean you go too low into the spectrum and you've practically got a bass |

Yeah i know what you mean, To be honest though, any lower than an 8 and basically its a Bass/Guitar combo. This 8 however still has that guitar "crunch" to it. You would never think its a bass, just a really low tuned guitar. I think its perfect for metal, as well as some funk and jazz type stuff.

Yeah, 20 frets....tune-o-matic bridge. They are partly for looks..you'll need a Gibson, but they made some decent Epiphones
